Elon Musk took to X on Sunday to slam Oscar-winning director Christopher Nolan for allegedly casting Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy in The Odyssey.

The billionaire responded to a tweet from an X user who claimed that if the Black Panther actress embodied the character written by the Greek poet Homer, it would be an "insult to him." They claimed that the book, penned around 700 BCE, originally described the character as

“fair skinned, blonde, and ‘the face that launched a thousand ships’ because she was so beautiful that men started a war over her. Casting choices that make the premise incoherent are admissions that the story was never the point and an insult to the author.”

Musk responded to the tweet by claiming:

“Chris Nolan has lost his integrity.”

Here's everything we know about Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey:

The Independent has reported that Christopher Nolan is currently in the post-production phase of The Odyssey. It will feature a star-studded lineup, including Matt Damon. Tom Holland, Jon Bernthal, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Anne Hathaway, Mia Goth, and Benny Safdie.

Lupita Nyong’o, a Black, Oscar-winning actress, reportedly joined the cast in 2024, and in new teasers that went viral this week, it was confirmed that 10-time Grammy nominee Travis Scott will also make his acting debut with the project. In the clips, the rapper stands atop a table and calls for the attention of a full room of soldiers, including Holland’s Telemachus and Benthal’s Menelaus.

The Odyssey is expected to roll out on the big screens on July 17, and it follows Damon’s Odysseus, king of Ithaca, as he makes his way back home to his wife, Penelope, after the Trojan War. Variety has reported that the film is the first narrative feature that was shot wholly with Imax cameras.

In the past, this was impossible as IMAX cameras were too noisy, rendering it impossible to shoot quieter scenes. However, given the innovation of a new film casing called a “blimp,” this noise can be lowered.

“The blimp system is a game-changer,” Nolan told Empire Magazine. “You can be shooting a foot from [an actor’s] face while they’re whispering and get usable sound. What that opens up are intimate moments of performance on the world’s most beautiful format.”

The project also drew considerable attention days ago when John Leguizamo, who stars in The Odyssey, told his fans to stay away from his projects if they don't see eye to eye with his views on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). In a video shared on his Instagram, he said on Wednesday,

“If you follow ICE, unfollow me. Don’t come to my shows and don’t watch my movies.” He added to the post, “Abolish ice!”

The actor has long been vocal about his views one ICE. Back in August, he took shots at Superman actor Dean Cain, who had expressed intent on joining the agency as a recruit. In an Instagram post he shared at the time, the actor said,

“What kind of loser volunteers to be an ICE officer? What a moron. Dean Cain, your pronouns are has/been.”
