Neutrogena is addressing renewed criticism over its past relationship with Hayden Panettiere in light of the actress' death at age 36.

Hayden Panettiere worked with the cosmetics company for about a decade, serving as a spokesperson from 2005 until 2015.

However, in a resurfaced interview with Jay Shetty three months prior, the actress spoke about the partnership and her experience after speaking publicly about postpartum depression.

"When they tell you about postpartum depression, you think about – 'OK, I feel negative feelings towards my child. I want to injure my child. I want to hurt my child.' I've never, ever had those feelings. But you … don't realize [how] broad of a spectrum you can really experience that on, and it's something I think that needs to be talked about. And women need to know that they’re not alone ... Neutrogena wanted to fire me over that."

The actress went on:

"I had no intention of or plan to talk about postpartum depression. It just came up, and I was just being honest. And never for a second did I think that anyone – or care that anyone – would have a bad reaction to it. It was my truth. I had the morals clauses. They caught absolutely everything. And of all the things … that they would fire me over, this was the last thing that I thought they would ever fire me over."

The renewed discussion has led to criticism of Neutrogena online, including calls for consumers to boycott the brand.

Neutrogena breaks silence days after Hayden Panettiere's death

In a statement shared on Instagram on Thursday, Aug. 20, Neutrogena acknowledged the controversy and reflected on Panettiere's time with the company.

"For more than a decade, Hayden was a valued member of the Neutrogena community for more than a decade. We are proud to have partnered with her and understand that we made her feel unsupported during this difficult time. This is not what Neutrogena stands for or who we want to be."

Neutrogena, however, didn't add any information on why the collaboration with Hayden Panettiere ended in 2015.

Instead, the beauty brand focused on acknowledging her place in its history and expressing regret over how she felt during a difficult period.

"Hayden's courage in sharing her challenges helped inspire important conversations and awareness. We are making a significant investment to a long-standing community health partner to help give more women access to the support they need, including care for postpartum."

The official statement followed renewed interest in Hayden Panettiere's previous comments about her relationship with the brand. She had spoken openly about her struggles with postpartum depression after welcoming her daughter, Kaya, in 2014.
