“You are a light”: Shawn Mendes pens sweet tribute to girlfriend Bruna Marquezine on 31st birthday 

Shawn Mendes has offered fans a rare look into his relationship with girlfriend Bruna Marquezine. The twenty-seven-year-old took to Instagram on Tuesday to celebrate Marquezine's thirty-first birthday with a heartfelt tribute. The post included videos of the couple at Casa Amarela Providencia in Rio de Janeiro, along with several sweet photos of the pair, who have largely kept their romance away from the public eye.

Mendes opened his message in Portuguese, writing "Feliz aniversário my baby," before going on to praise Marquezine for the impact she has had on his life.

"You are a light and a mãe in every room you walk into. Not to be tooooo sappy but you've truly changed my life, and I am so so grateful for you," he wrote.

Shawn Mendes then added a message in Portuguese that translated to,

"I love you so, so, so much. We all do amor."

Romance rumors between Mendes and Marquezine originally began circulating in December 2025. The couple have since been photographed together in Los Angeles and in Marquezine's home country of Brazil. As per a report shared by Us Weekly, before his relationship with the Brazilian actress, Mendes dated Camila Cabello on and off from 2019 to 2023.

Shawn Mendes spoke candidly about navigating sexuality speculation since he was young:

Before the birthday tribute made headlines, Mendes had already been navigating a far more personal kind of public scrutiny. As per a report shared by Us Weekly, the singer addressed years of speculation about his sexuality during an intimate October 2024 concert at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, where he performed his album Shawn, telling the crowd per fan footage shared on social media,

"The real truth about my life and my sexuality is, man, I'm just figuring it out like everyone. I don't really know sometimes and I know other times."

Mendes was open about the fact that the speculation had followed him since he was "really young." He called sexuality "a beautifully complex thing" that was hard to put into boxes, though he was equally frank about what years of that public scrutiny had actually felt like.

"It always felt like such an intrusion on something very personal to me. Something I was figuring out in myself. Something I had yet to discover and still have yet to discover," he shared.

He also spoke about the fear that came with addressing it at all.

"It feels really scary because we live in a society that has a lot to say about that. I'm trying to be really brave and just allow myself to just be human and feel things. That's all I wanna say about that for now," he added.

Back in 2024, Shawn Mendes appeared on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast and opened up about his decision to cancel his 2022 Wonder: The World Tour after just seven dates, describing it as both the "hardest" and "greatest" decision he had ever made.

Reflecting on that period, Shawn Mendes recalled feeling a "general darkness or lowness" tied to depression and anxiety. What made it worse, he shared, was that viewing life through that lens kept him from seeing "

all the people who are loving you and supporting you."

He had done "a lot of tours" and "been in hard places before," but this time was different.

"I had nowhere to go when things were getting hard, you know? I didn't have other aspects of life that I felt connected to, that I could have leaned into to have a little bit of a break from touring, come back and just find that balance," he explained.

He then added that,

"And I knew there was only one way of doing that. And it was by just like creating a life."

Shawn Mendes was equally candid about the guilt that came with the decision, particularly regarding his team of nearly a hundred people who had sacrificed time away from their families to put the show together.

"It was like, 'Oh man, people were excited,' you know? People were proud of what they created. And that was the hard part," he said.

That being said, Shawn Mendes was clear about what canceling the tour ultimately gave him.

"Canceling that tour was by far the hardest decision of my life and by far the greatest decision of my life — and it gave me a life, you know? It gave me time to discover so much about myself," he continued.
