Brandy celebrated Lea Salonga’s latest career milestone with an emotional tribute following the singer and actress’ induction into the Hollywood Walk of Fame.On Saturday, Sept. 5, the Cinderella star took to social media to share a message praising Lea Salonga’s influence as a performer and her importance to representation in entertainment.The 47-year-old songstress highlighted the Broadway superstar's contribution towards providing voices for the characters of Princess Jasmine in Aladdin and Mulan in Mulan, mentioning that she helped children identify with their character in the Disney story.“Through Jasmine and Mulan, you did more than give princesses their songs… you gave children who had been waiting outside the fairytale a way inside. Before the world knew how to speak about representation, you had already turned it into sound.”Brandy also pointed to Lea Salonga’s long list of historic achievements.“Your history is filled with firsts…the first Asian woman to win a Tony Award, a Disney Legend, and now the first Filipina ever honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.”Salonga became the first Asian woman to win a Tony Award when she took home the honor for Miss Saigon in 1991. Salonga was later declared a Disney Legend and became the first Filipina to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.Brandy, in her appreciation for Salonga, concentrated on the effects of her accomplishments on artists that have followed her. She said that Salonga’s contributions opened up avenues for people to dream and emulate her success.“But ‘first’ is not the deepest word in your story. The deepest word is ‘after.’ Who could dream after you? Who could enter after you? Who could walk through because you left the doorway open? You did not merely become possible. You made possibility contagious.”Brandy calls singing alongside Lea Salonga a “blessing”Brandy also recalled performing A Whole New World alongside Lea Salonga, saying the experience allowed her to see the person behind the celebrated voice.“Having the blessing of singing A Whole New World beside you, I stopped being the singer and became the witness. The world knows the gold in your voice. I had the blessing of discovering the gold in your heart. Hollywood gave you a star…but that star did not make you light. It simply told the ground what the sky has always known.”The tribute came after Lea Salonga was honored Friday with the 2,855th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The star was unveiled on Hollywood Boulevard in front of the Pantages Theatre.In her speech, the singing icon expressed her hope that the new milestone will inspire the next generation of Filipinos to do the same."I hope that someday a young Filipino kid comes to Hollywood, sees my name and thinks, ‘Oh, maybe I can get here too.’"Meanwhile, aside from Brandy, Ming-Na Wen and Darren Criss were also among the guests who spoke at the ceremony.Ming-Na Wen was the speaking voice of Fa Mulan in Mulan, while Darren Criss is a Filipino-American actor famous for his performances in Glee and The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.
