A newly discovered letter regarding the death of Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain has sparked fresh controversy online. The letter was written about 18 months after Cobain's death by his wife Courtney Love, who was also the frontwoman of the rock band Hole.

The letter reportedly reveals Courtney's request to the Seattle police to hand over the full investigation file on her husband's death and to officially close the case. An investigative group called "Who killed Kurt?" discovered the document after carrying out its own independent research into the musician's death for the past two years.

The group and its supporters have long argued that Kurt's death in April 1994 was caused by a shotgun wound to the head. However, a retired captain from the Seattle Police Department determined that Kurt's death was a suicide rather than a homicide.

Neil Low opened up about Courtney's appeal for the handover of Kurt Cobain's investigation files

The retired captain from the Seattle Police Department was Neil Low, who worked as the department's night duty commander and internal affairs officer for nearly 50 years, later became a noir mystery writer after openly sharing his perspective on the mismanagement of Kurt's investigation files.

Yesterday, Neil reportedly revealed Kurt Cobain's wife's request for the files to News Nation's Jesse Weber. He said,

"In 50 years of police work, I’ve never seen anything like this. Most people want it to go away. They don’t want to think about it. They don’t want to see it. They don’t want to have reminders of it."

The captain further added that the attorney of Kurt Cobain's wife, Bryan P. Coluccio, should have known better than to make such a request because police departments are built on record keeping and never return evidence. He said,

"He didn’t put a lot of thought into it because police departments are built on record keeping. We have to document everything. We don’t give back evidence and pretend, oh, it never happened."

He criticized the move as careless and suggested the letter may have been written simply to appease her.

Internal memo recovered by "Who killed Kurt?" group

The "Who killed Kurt?" group found an internal memo sent by Seattle Police Department Sgt. Don Cameron to Lt. Al Gerdes, which revealed that Courtney had earlier asked for all photographs taken at the scene to be destroyed.

According to Cameron, Kurt Cobain's wife was worried that the pictures might end up in the wrong hands and reach the press. Upon hearing her request to eliminate the photographs, Cameron refused and said that her demand would make the department look foolish and unprofessional.

The file also contained two undeveloped rolls of 35mm film, which the Seattle police developed in 2014 during a case review. However, the department has not yet disclosed what the photos show.

Later, a detective said that he wanted to examine the pictures because he believed they would reveal more details. He further explained that he could not see them since the department would not release them. Consequently, he filed a public disclosure request, but the police denied it.
