Other Mommy trailer perfects jumpscares as viewers scream during The Odyssey screening pre-game

Moviegoers expecting an epic voyage with The Odyssey got an unexpected detour into nightmare territory when the Other Mommy trailer lit up the IMAX screens. After the breakthrough success of Obsession, Blumhouse Productions is back with another supernatural horror movie, based on the 2024 novel Incidents Around the House by Josh Malerman.

The theaters descended into chaos and a sea of screams as the Other Mommy trailer took over, before The Odyssey's big show. Packed with perfectly timed jump scares, the trailer offers the first glimpse of actress Jessica Chastain as the titular supernatural entity, haunting a young Bela (Arabella Olivia Clark).

The official synopsis for the film reads as follows:

''Bela, an 8-year-old girl living in a home with marital problems, confronts a sinister entity that comes out of her closet. The presence, who she calls "Other Mommy," becomes increasingly threatening to her and her family.''

This is how Bela is greeted by her 'mother' Ursula in the trailer, who turns out to be Other Mommy, the titular paranormal entity haunting her house. An ordinary lunch, complete with pasta and cookie dough ice cream, turns into a nightmare for Bela when she realizes the woman standing in her kitchen is not her mother but the supernatural entity, who looks eerily similar to Ursula.

The trailer takes a turn when Russ (Jay Duplass), Bela's father, arrives in the kitchen after being alerted by the smoke alarm. In a jump scare straight out of your and Russ' nightmares, the latter finds his 'wife' under the table, contorting backwards on all fours.

Once you compose yourself after this spooky jump scare, which is bound to scare even the most seasoned horror fans, the Other Mommy trailer features a series of fast-moving shots, as the family tries to decipher what's real and what's not. The trailer concludes with Bela questioning Ursula, confused whether she is really her mother or the titular entity.

While Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey unexpectedly shocked everyone with some spooky moments, fans were given a taste of horror when IMAX played the Other Mommy trailer as 'pre-game ' before the epic movie.

Fans took to Reddit to share their experiences of watching the trailer in IMAX, before The Odyssey. Naturally, Jessica Chastain's viral kitchen scene was a hit among fans, resulting in screams in the theatres, even before Nolan's masterpiece began screening.

It was certainly a good marketing choice on the makers' part as the grandeur of the screen made the trailer spookier. A Reddit user wrote:

''We saw this trailer yesterday before The Odyssey in IMAX and the giant screen and insanely loud sound made this look like the scariest movie ever made.''
