Since the Avengers: Doomsday trailer was released yesterday, fans have been wondering if Marvel characters who weren't in the trailer might still be in the film. Marvel most likely hasn't revealed all characters who are going to appear in the film, leading to fans hoping for the return of Deadpool, Daredevil, and Spider-Man, among others.

Ryan Reynolds has now teased a new Deadpool film, which could be the perfect Avengers: Doomsday set-up.

Is Deadpool returning in Avengers: Doomsday?

Back in 2024, when the lineup for Avengers: Doomsday was announced, Ryan Reynolds wasn't a part of it. While Deadpool & Wolverine came out soon after the announcement of the lineup, it wasn't confirmed if Deadpool would return in Doomsday.

Recently, at Fanatics Fest, Ryan Reynolds teased a new Deadpool film, talking about which direction he thinks the character's story can go next. He said that there are a few storylines from the comics that the earlier films haven't explored yet, something he would like to see in a new potential film.

Reynolds said,

"There’s certainly some stuff that I love that [Deadpool co-creator] Fabian [Nicieza] wrote that is incredible [and] Gerry Duggan, another friend and incredible comic writer, that we can put in. But then there’s stuff upcoming. There’s eventually, you know, remotely another ‘Deadpool’ film. So it’s going to be great.”

Reynolds also talked about how he has written a few ideas for a new potential film, but he doesn't want to give the character central focus since he thinks that Deadpool works better in a group. That seems to suggest that Deadpool might just be a great addition to Avengers: Doomsday.

However, back in 2024, in a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Reynolds had said that if Deadpool ever works too closely with the Avengers or the X-Men and becomes a part of either group, it's the end for the character. He justified his stance by saying,

“Deadpool works so well appearing with the X-Men and Avengers, but he always needs to stay an outsider. His ultimate dream is to be accepted and appreciated. But he can’t be accepted. His coping mechanism of deflecting shame through humor works only when used to pave over his many inadequacies. If and when he does become an Avenger or X-Man, we’re at the end of his journey.”

Thus, Reynolds' recent comments regarding a new Deadpool film could mean that a new one is indeed coming. It could also mean that we'll see him part of a group but not the Avengers or X-Men, which means he might not be in Avengers: Doomsday. Or Reynolds might just be teasing a new film now so that fans don't expect Deadpool in Doomsday and are taken by surprise when he appears.

Marvel is being extremely careful about what they confirm and what they don't. Neither have they confirmed a new Deadpool film nor if the character is appearing in Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars. Since Wolverine is rumored to be appearing in Secret Wars, we might just see Deadpool's reunion with the X-Men hero.

Fans have been speculating that Marvel could be thinking of a Deadpool & Wolverine 2 since the first one was a huge commercial success and was loved by fans. Some fans would also like to see Deadpool team up with Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man (although that one might take time).

The audience isn't tired of Deadpool and would love to see him irrespective of whether he returns in Avengers: Doomsday or a new independent film of his own. Stay tuned for more updates.

Avengers: Doomsday will be released in theaters on December 18, 2026.
