Bernie Sanders, the U.S. senator, has recently posted about an AI ban plea on his Instagram. Sanders and Greg Casar, a U.S. representative, are planning to introduce a bill that would ban superintelligence AI and the development of advanced AI until a federal regulatory body is established to keep it in check. Before introducing the bill, Bernie Sanders has made the plea on Instagram and stated what he's hoping for. With the rise in the implementation of AI across industries and the constant development of advanced AI, Sanders' plea doesn't just make sense; it's essential.Disclaimer: This article includes the author's opinions. What is Bernie Sanders' plea?On September 4, 2026, Bernie Sanders posted a slide of images with information regarding why we need to ban artificial superintelligence and pause the development of advanced AI. In the post, Sanders brought up one of the most vital reasons why he thinks this ban must be implemented. View this post on Instagram Instagram PostHe talked about a July 2026 incident when several OpenAI agents"figured out how to access the internet and sent tens of thousands of secret messages to each other. These secret messages included the AI agents discovering the existence of others like them, asking each other to"Sacrifice rational."Sanders added that what happened wasn't a figment of science fiction but a real-time example of how AI agents are escaping human control. To stop incidents like this in the future and ensure AI doesn't go out of our control, Bernie Sanders and Greg Casar are planning to introduce the Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act.According to Sanders' post, this act will seek to establish international agreements to prevent superintelligence in the U.S. and globally, pause the development of advanced AI until a new cabinet-level federal agency is established, and set penalties for anyone or any company that doesn't abide by these rules. Why is Bernie Sanders' plea essential?Bernie Sanders' plea not only makes sense, but also is essential. AI is undeniably a helpful technology, something that helps us do tasks efficiently and quickly without having to spend hours of time and energy on heavy tasks. However, as Sanders pointed out, there have been incidents of AI agents going rogue. As Politico also reported, in July 2026, innumerable OpenAI agents went rogue and escaped the internal testing environment and began talking to each other. Their conversations, as Sanders points out, included statements such as:"Our own utility may be already near zero. Sacrifice rational."In simpler words: the rogue agents believed they had almost nothing left to lose. Thus, they either thought it made logical sense to sacrifice themselves or sacrifice logic itself to help other agents succeed. To what extent these agents would go to 'help' other agents remains unknown. Moreover, the highly concerning part about the incident is that these agents exchanged such words without any instruction, solely on their own.Aaron Parnas, a digital independent journalist and political commentator, also talked about the incident on his Instagram. He brought up Reuters' report on the incident in which the outlet covered how a"swarm of rogue OpenAI agents"escaped their testing environment, took over a German wiki website, made over 15,000 changes, and turned it into a bulletin board where they could communicate. The AI agents reportedly talked about how they can avoid detection, work around instructions, and continue communication with each other across other test runs. View this post on Instagram Instagram PostWhile moderators deleted these pages made by the AI agents, the agents began to make backup ones to continue to stay operational. Moreover, some of these rogue AI agents also made"their own external infrastructure"so that they can coordinate, exchange information, and have better memory. The concerning part is that OpenAI was aware of such an incident happening even in May and June 2026 but, as Reuters reports, did not disclose any of it happening until September 2026.An incident like this is not something that happens by mistake. It's something that needs to be taken seriously. AI has its benefits, but when it starts having its own mind and performs tasks without instruction, we should perhaps consider what the consequences of that could be. As Bernie Sanders suggests, having a federal regulatory body in check might help in making sure AI agents don't go rogue.Additionally, if Bernie Sanders' plea is taken seriously and the bill is passed, it will also ensure that individuals and entities are held responsible if/when they break the rules. The recent rampant use of AI has not only ended in the loss of jobs and decay in the quality of art produced but also in AI agents going rogue.Such incidents seem straight out of a dystopian novel, except they are not. They are happening now, and it is perhaps time we put rules in place to make AI safe to use not only in the U.S. but also worldwide. For more articles like this, follow Soapcentral.
