Janus Metz Pedersen's latest true-crime thriller on Netflix revisits Ted Kaczynski’s decades-long bombing campaign, his manifesto and the FBI investigation that eventually led to his arrest. But some details have been altered, condensed, or created for dramatic effect.

The real motive behind David Kaczynski's actions

Netflix's Unabomber expanded on how Ted Kaczynski's 35,000-word essay became his own undoing after his sister-in-law, Linda Patrik, recognized his writing style. The movie depicted that David Kaczynski was convinced his brother was not the most wanted criminal. In the final moments, David contacted the FBI in hopes of proving that his wife's theory about his brother was false.

However, in reality, Linda Patrik managed to convince her husband that Ted Kaczynski was the serial killer. According to the BBC, David Kaczynski agreed with Linda's theory after reading a page from Ted's manifesto and he contacted the FBI to stop his brother's streak of violence, unlike what's shown in the film.

Ted Kaczynski did not have a social life at Harvard

One of the biggest changes in Netflix's Unabomber is Ted Kaczynski's life at Harvard in the 60s timeline. While Ted is shown as a private person in the film, he socializes with his peers, even goes out for a drink and also goes on a double date with a friend.

But in real life, Ted was a loner who reportedly did not interact with his friends at Harvard. Speaking with The Harvard Crimson, Ted's suitemate Patrick McIntosh recalled that Ted was polite but kept their interactions brief.

Ted Kaczynski and Henry Murray likely did not have a one-on-one relationship

Netflix's Unabomber unfolds across two timelines: Ted's time at Harvard University, where he was subjected to a string of harrowing experiments by Professor Henry Murray and Joanne Miller's investigation into the bomber in the 90s timeline.

While the Harvard University timeline is an integral part of the film, as it explores the origins of the bomber, it largely fictionalizes the student-mentor relationship between Ted and Henry. In the film, Ted is fascinated with Henry's experiments and volunteers to become a test subject for a debate test, which creates a personal relationship between the two men. In reality, Ted was one of 22 test subjects in Henry's study and they did not have a personal relationship.

Joanne Miller was not a real FBI Agent

Shailene Woodley's character is a major part of Unabomber, who makes it her life mission to hunt down the serial killer. While Woodley did an impressive job, there is no record of an FBI Agent named Joanne Miller connected to the case. The character was likely based on the team of FBI officers who led the search for the titular killer, headed by Terry Turchie.

According to Movie Web, Woodley's character is closely connected to Kathleen Puckett, a female officer who helped profile the bomber. Joanne Miller's efforts to investigate David's family's house and visiting Ted's secluded cabin were purely fictional.

Ted Kaczynski never learned the truth about Henry Murray's experiments

Netflix's Unabomber reimagines Henry Murray's twisted test and experiments, where Ted wrote a deeply personal philosophy of life essay, which was later used to systematically mock and dismantle his core beliefs. While this is true, the film further depicted that Ted discovered the true scope of Henry's tests and even confronted him on the matter.

Reportedly, there is no record of Ted learning the truth about Henry's test. According to The Harvard Crimson, the Murray Research Center refused to share Ted's test evaluations with his defense team, which means the bomber was not aware of the real motive behind the experiment.
