Shaquille O'Neal explains why the MCU couldn't put him in the Avengers

Shaquille O'Neal is a big name in the industry, thanks to his NBA career. Even outside the sports industry, he has appeared in many TV appearances and movies, which just adds to his recognition. He has a net worth of $500 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth, and is also a successful business figure, with investments in brands like Papa Johns. This makes O'Neal a big name both in and outside the sports industry.
While he has never been cast in Marvel, he has been connected to DC. In the 1997 movie Steel, he appeared as John Henry Irons and was even a part of Static Shock. However, in the recent interview with Variety, while talking about his wish to be in the Avengers, he revealed that the team also liked him and considered having him in the movie. However, they were a little worried that viewers would take no time to recognize Shaq, instead of seeing him as the character he would play in the MCU. He said:
"Alright… I guess my face is too bigtime."
Shaquille O'Neal has appeared in many movies and other projects over the years, often playing himself. However, from his answer, it seems like Shaq's fame and recognizable face are making it harder for him to play a character in the MCU. While Shaq's Avengers dream might still be a dream for now, fans will have to wait and see if he ever gets the chance to become part of the MCU.
However, this is not the first time Shaquille O'Neal has spoken up about his wish to join the MCU. In a past interview with Entertainment Weekly, O'Neal said he would love to be in one of the Avengers movies and joked that he would like to take on Robert Downey Jr.
According to IMDb, Shaquille O'Neal has three projects currently in the works, which include Gravesend, Shaq Talk, and Grown Ups 3. During the interview with Variety, he also opened up about his struggle to land acting roles where he can play someone other than himself, saying that he would "love to do more action roles," but Hollywood executives told him that he is too recognizable. He added that they feel that audiences would see him on screen and immediately think, "Oh, that's Shaq," making it harder for him to play different characters.
MCU's next movie, Avengers: Doomsday, is scheduled to release on December 18, 2026.
