Shelley Fabares dies at 82, remembered for a career that touched generations

Shelley Fabares, the actress and singer who became a familiar face to generations of television viewers, died in Los Angeles in August 2026. She was 82 at the time of her passing and had been ill for a short time before her death.

Her family did not reveal the cause of her death, but a statement was released that reads:

"To her family and friends, Shelley was a source of love, strength, laughter, and comfort."

The statement continues:

"She was a devoted wife, cherished stepmother, daughter, sister, niece, aunt, family member, and loyal friend whose warmth, generosity, humor, and grace made an enduring difference in the lives of everyone who knew her. She had a remarkable ability to make people feel welcomed, valued, and cared for."

Fabares was surrounded by her family, including her husband of more than four decades, actor Mike Farrell. Her death closes a career that began when she was a child. Her talent helped Fabares step into television, movies, and music.

Fabares first became widely known as Mary Stone on The Donna Reed Show before finding pop success with "Johnny Angel" and appearing opposite Elvis Presley. Decades later, she reached another generation through Coach, where she earned two Emmy nominations.

Shelley Fabares was born in 1944 in California and stepped into the world of entertainment at a very young age. At just three, she was introduced to modeling, which also opened the doors for her into acting and dancing.

Fabares started to appear on television as a child and even began taking film roles before reaching her teenage years. Finally, her major breakthrough came with The Donna Reed Show, where she played Mary Stone. She played the teenage daughter of the family.

The sitcom was quite popular and Fabares' Mary ended up being a fan-adored character. Her popularity grew and it opened an unexpected door into music. It was in 1962 when she recorded "Johnny Angel," a song she performed on the sitcom.

It climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and sold more than a million copies. This success gave Shelley a brief but notable run as a recording artist. She then moved forward with acting in films and even secured three appearances opposite Elvis Presley in Girl Happy, Spinout and Clambake.
