Spider-Man: Brand New Day teases Sadie Sink's mystery role in a new clip

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is just a week away from its release. But the team has managed to keep the most intriguing mystery of the movie a secret: The identity of Sadie Sink's character. Rumors suggest that she is playing the mutant Jean Grey in the movie. But neither the Brand New Day team nor the studios have confirmed her identity.

Now, a recent clip featuring Sink's character is doing rounds across the internet. This time, finally see what she looks like in the movie, but her character's identity still remains a mystery, only adding to the hype of Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Who is Sadie Sink playing in Spider-Man: Brand New Day?

We see Sink looking like her normal self, with red hair, looking at the camera and asking the figure off-screen what they would do. Then, she proceeds to say something, but her mouth is redacted, maintaining the secrecy around her character. Some believe that the black bar covering her mouth is a distraction and that whatever she says would be communicated telepathically.

If she were communicating telepathically, then it would confirm that Sink is indeed the MCU's Jean Grey, something that the Brand New Day team doesn't want to confirm as of now. However, this clip only ensures that everyone who hasn't booked their tickets would do so just to learn who Sink is playing in the MCU.

Director Destin Daniel Cretton believes that the mystery makes the movie better:

Director Destin Daniel Cretton sat down for an interview with The Hollywood Reporter this week. In that interview, the reporter asked Cretton if the production team is intentionally keeping Sadie Sink's character under wraps to recreate the hype around Spider-Man: No Way Home.

To this question, the filmmaker responded, saying that it is impossible for Spider-Man: Brand New Day to go bigger than No Way Home. Then, he further added:

"Keeping what Sadie’s doing under wraps, you’ll honestly understand when you see the movie. The movie is a better movie if you don’t know certain things. I wish people didn’t know anything when they go in to watch this movie, but we’re not doing it for any other reason but to protect the experience of the fans."

Cretton continued:

"I want everybody to have the best experience when they go watch this movie. And whoever goes on opening weekend, you are going to have a much cooler experience if you go in not knowing certain things."

Apart from Sink, another rumor this week also has shocked fans.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day might be making a controversial change to Spidey's origin:

The Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailers confirm that Peter Parker gains the ability of producing his webs organically, much like Tobey Maguire's version. Moreover, we also see Peter Parker's eyes going black, causing him to loose control. The first trailer mentions that Peter's DNA might be mutating, but we don't know if he is a mutant or not.

However, a recent Spider-Man: Brand New Day leak suggested that Peter is a mutant in the MCU. According to this leak, the spider bite triggered the MCU Peter's dormant mutant X gene, something that Sadie Sink's Jean Grey confirms to him. If this rumor were true, then it would be controversial, because Peter in the comics is a mutate and not a mutant.

Mutants like the X-Men gain their powers, which mutates like Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four gain their abilities by accidents or experiments. But this is not the first time the MCU might alter a character's origin. The Ms. Marvel show famously made Iman Vellani's Kamala Khan a mutant even though the character was an inhuman in the comics at that time.

But it should be noted that Kamala Khan was always intended to be a mutant when she was created back in 2013. Marvel Studios executive and Kamala Khan co-creator Sana Amanat confirmed it in a July 2022 Empire interview. Amanat did not specify why Kamala was made inhuman, but it was probably due to corporate politics.

At the time of Kamala's creation, the word "mutant" was associated with the X-Men comics, ensuring that if she were a mutant, Kamala would have been a part of Fox's X-Men franchise. The 2010s were a time when Marvel's publishing arm was considering killing off mutants with the Terrigen Mist and replacing them with the Inhumans to ensure that Fox would run out of X-Men comics to adapt.

Therefore, the Marvel editorial team would've asked Amanat and G. Willow Wilson (the other Ms. Marvel creator) to make the comics Kamala an Inhuman. But Kamala was retconned as a mutant in the comics continuity as well a few years ago to match the character's on-screen counterpart. Thus, Marvel might be doing something similar with Spider-Man's origin as well.
