Stephen Colbert's Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past remains in development despite the WB-Paramount merger rumors. On October 5, ScreenRant's Rob Keyes responded to an X post that claimed that Stephen Colbert's Lord of the Rings movie had been paused following the Warner Bros.-Paramount merger. Confirming the news in the post, Keyes wrote on X:

"Confirmed not accurate."

Additionally, Knight Edge Media exclusively confirmed that the movie remains in development, with WB reiterating that it has not been canceled. Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past is the upcoming movie with Stephen Colbert serving as the writer in the movie alongside his son, Peter, and Philippa Boyens. According to IMDb, the movie stars Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, and Dominic Monaghan. As reported by ScreenRant, Colbert made the movie deal with Warner Bros. before the merger. However, he was later fired by CBS.

After the WB-Paramount merger, things reportedly changed for Stephen Colbert's The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past, as Knight Edge Media reported that the movie has been put on "pause," which has also raised questions about what the merger could mean for the project.

Knight Edge Media exclusively reported that the newly formed Skydance has hit some development problems with the film while also noting the other changes at Warner Bros., including the exit of key executives, Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy, and CBS parting ways with Colbert.

As per the latest update by the outlet, Warner Bros. has clarified that Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past has not been canceled and is still in development. There is some good news here, as the movie is still being worked on. However, viewers shouldn't expect to see it on the big screen for quite some time. Knight Edge Media reported that the team is still working on the scripts, and the new studio reportedly wants to wait and see how The Hunt for Gollum, scheduled to release next year, performs before deciding on more Lord of the Rings movies.

Keyes' response adds another layer of confirmation to the latest update, backing up the report that The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past has not been put on hold following the WB-Paramount merger and is still being worked on.

The first announcement about the movie came earlier this year in March, when Warner Bros. shared the news through its official social media accounts. The video started with Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson talking about The Hunt for Gollum and then introducing Stephen Colbert, saying they would work together on the next movie, Shadow of the Past.

As per the movie's logline, the story follows Sam, Merry, and Pippin years after their big journey, as they return to where their adventure first began. At the same time, Sam's daughter Elanor finds an old secret and starts looking into what really happened before the War of the Ring.
