Television host, comedian, actor, and political commentator Bill Maher is calling out Hollywood celebrities for virtue signaling against ICE and their ongoing nationwide raids.

Speaking with the California Post on January 26, Maher, 70, shared:

“Hollywood [is] sort of the epicenter of the woke left. I don’t think they’re doing the Democratic Party any favors. I think if Democrats want to win elections in the future, job one, tell the celebrities to ‘Just shut the f**k up.’ You’re not helping. You don’t strike people in most of the country as sensible or in touch with reality.”

Elsewhere, the Real Time host criticized the monopoly of power in California and Washington by liberals and conservatives, respectively. He added:

“California could stand for a lot more centrist policies. It’s just not a good thing when one party completely controls anything. That’s certainly true of the Republicans also, who are drunk with power in Washington, overstepping their bounds and doing things that are now making them unpopular. I would love to see both sides marginalize their crazies.”

Bill Maher previously called out the Hollywood fraternity at the Golden Globes

Earlier this month, Bill Maher stopped at the 83rd Golden Globes red carpet at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, and mocked Hollywood celebrities like Wanda Sykes, Jean Smart, Natasha Lyonne, and Mark Ruffalo for wearing “Be GOOD” and the “ICE OUT” pins.

When a reporter asked him if the award ceremony was an ideal platform for such political activism, Maher chuckled and then said:

“Come on, we’re here for show business today. Uhh, you know, it was a terrible thing that happened, and it shouldn’t have happened. And, if they didn’t act like such thugs, it wouldn’t have had to happen. But I don’t need to wear a pin about it.”

It is noteworthy that many celebrities wore the pins to show solidarity for the victims of ICE raids, including Renee Nicole Macklin Good, a 37-year-old mother who was fatally shot by ICE agent Jonathan Ross in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on January 7.

Amid Bill Maher’s ridicule, Wanda Sykes threw shade at the comedian while presenting the Best Stand-up Comedy on Television Award

“Bill Maher, you give us so much, but I would love a little less. Just try less,” Sykes, 61, said about Maher, who was nominated in the category for his 2025 HBO special, ‘Is Anyone Else Seeing This?’

The award was eventually won by Ricky Gervais for his December 2025 special, Mortality. Notably, Bill Maher previously predicted that he wouldn’t win on his Club Random podcast, citing:

“I speak freely, and this woke town f**king hates that. And that’s okay. I’ve made my peace with that.”

During his recent interview with the California Post, Maher criticized the Golden Globes for snubbing Joe Rogan in the first-ever Best Podcast category.

“It was typical and predictable and also ridiculous that Joe Rogan wouldn’t be nominated in a category that he dominates,” Bill said.

Good Hang with Amy Poehler went on to win the award.

Last week, Maher also told his guests Dana Carvey and David Spade that the Golden Globes only nominated “super woke stuff,” while describing them as “f**king smug a**holes.”

“I’m sure there were good shows, but it was glaring that Joe Rogan was not nominated. I mean, it is kind of popular,” he claimed.

While Bill Maher is a self-proclaimed liberal, he often criticizes both right and left, with many considering him politically heterodox.

While he has called out Hollywood celebrities on multiple occasions this month, Maher has previously spoken against the ICE raids.

For instance, he called out Dr Phil when he appeared as a guest on his Real Time program.

“Why are you going on these ICE raids? I don’t understand that. You’re a guy who, we know, for so many years, has been working to put families together. To bring families who are apart and heal them. And now you’re going on raids with people who are literally separating families,” Bill stated.

He also denounced ICE agents for wearing masks and concealing their faces.

In November, he also feuded with Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, on his podcast.

“That’s one of the reasons the natives are restless on your side, even your people, because they voted for, ‘Let’s get the criminals out of the country.’ And what they got was, ‘Umm, no, let’s find people who’ve been working here for ten years and go to Home Depot and get them.’ We don’t like that.”

When Lara Trump defended the ICE raids, Bill Maher responded that “tackling people at their workplaces” was no way to “handle” things. He also said that while former President Barack Obama also “deported a lot of people,” he never did it by being an “a**hole… thug… masked… cruel.”

However, Bill Maher agreed in the end that those who entered the country illegally shouldn’t be harbored, nor should they be punished, claiming the Trump administration had taken things “too far.”

Maher, who has been a longtime and vocal critic of the POTUS, had dinner with Trump last year. At the time, he said:

“My whole personality, unlike a lot of the people out here, isn’t just Trump. I don’t hate everything. I don’t have Trump derangement syndrome. Having said that, there’s just a lot of stuff I don’t like, and I’m going to call it out.”

On January 23, Real Time with Bill Maher returned for the 24th season. During the episode, the host noted, referring to ICE raids and the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro:

“I really don’t like what’s going on with ICE, as most Americans don’t. I really don’t like what’s going on with the political retribution. But, you know, Venezuela, do I hate it? No, not completely… If you’re the kind of people who hate oppression, well, I mean, that’s a pretty big boot to lift off people’s heads. If Cuba goes next, that would be good.”

However, he clarified he didn’t approve that Trump still controlled the “agenda,” be it declaring his intention with Greenland or the raids in Minneapolis.
