Hae Min Lee’s murder case received immense public attention, especially after a 2014 podcast unveiled further details related to the case. Though the judgment against Adnan Syed was already given, things took a turn after the podcast was released.

The podcast created a huge public uproar, causing the case to be reexamined, which unveiled further details that were initially not presented in court. Here is the timeline of the 1999 Hae Min Lee case, which remains one of the most complicated cases even today.

Timeline of the 1999 Hae Min Lee Case

1) Details of the murder in the Hae Min Lee case

After moving to the United States in 1992, Hae Min Lee joined Woodlawn High School. She was only 18 in 1999 when the brutal incident happened to her. She was in a secret relationship with Adnan Syed, who was 17 at that time.

The two of them were classmates, but their relationship did not last long, and they broke up. Things took a turn when Lee did not return home on January 13, 1999. After 27 days of search, Lee’s body was found.

Her body was buried in a park, and she had died by strangulation. Right after the discovery of her dead body, progress in the Lee case arrived with the arrest of Adnan Syed. However, even after getting arrested, Adnan maintained his innocence. He also pleaded not guilty in the murder case.

2) Evidence and witnesses in the Hae Min Lee case

In 2000, the trial started for Hae Min Lee’s case, where cell phone data was brought forth as evidence connecting Adnan Syed to the murder. Jay Wilds became the source of this information as he testified and noted that he, along with Adnan, buried Hae Min’s body in the park.

Through the cell phone data, Adnan Syed gets further entangled in the case, as his cell phone data indicates that he was in the exact location during the murder. With the evidence against Syed Adnan, he received life in prison after being found guilty of kidnapping, murder, robbery along with false imprisonment.

However, things take a turn after fifteen years, with the Serial podcast getting immense popularity, bringing the attention of the people to Syed Adnan’s case. The podcast caused the reexamination of the case, leading to the case moving in a completely different direction.

Through the podcast, further details of Hae Min Lee’s case are unveiled, especially Adnan Syed’s alibi, which was not presented. According to the podcast, Adnan Syed had an alibi, Asia McClain, and Asia McClain admitted that she was with Syed during the time of the murder.

The podcast also added that the DNA, which was found, was not examined, and the cell phone data should not be relied upon. In November 2015, an order was issued that asked Syed to present the witness after the court agreed to review the conviction in February. June 2016 brought a huge turn in the case after Adnan Syed was granted a new trial.

Many claims were made regarding the mishandling of the case. A new trial was once again granted to Adnan Syed in March 2018; however, things took a turn in March 2019 when a decision was made to uphold his conviction. His case was also declined by the Supreme Court of the United States in November of the same year.

4) Adnan Syed leaves prison after Hae Min Lee’s case gets “possible involvement of alternative suspects”

After a motion was filed by the Baltimore prosecutors in September 2022, Adnan Syed was finally released from prison. The investigation unveiled that there is a possibility of the “involvement of alternative suspects”; however, the investigations continued even after Syed left prison, as he was not declared innocent according to the reports.

Syed received GPS monitoring. Things took a turn on March 28, 2023, due to Lee’s brother. Lee’s brother did not receive any proper notice for the hearing leading to Syed’s conviction getting reinstated.

The decision received immense criticism from Syed’s lawyer, Erica J. Suter. Suter pointed out that it was “re-traumatizing” for Adnan to be returned to the status of a “convicted felon”.

5) Adnan Syed’s present situation

Though Adnan Syed’s murder conviction still stands, he was resentenced after it was reportedly ruled in March 2025 that he would not be spending more time in prison. As of March 2025, the details of Syed Adnan’s life were unveiled by several reports. It was reported that he was enrolled at Georgetown University.
