The Lindsay Clancy case breakdown: How alleged mental health spiral ended up in murder

The Lindsay Clancy case has been making headlines since the trial started. It follows the tragedy involving a Connecticut native who worked as a nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital. The woman is accused of killing her three children: 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan at their family home in Duxbury on January 24, 2023.

Prosecutors say the woman used exercise bands to strangle the children before trying to take her own life by cutting her wrists and neck and jumping from a second-floor window. She survived but suffered serious spinal injuries and is now paralyzed from the waist down.

Lindsay Clancy has pleaded not guilty of the murders as her lawyers say that she did kill her own kids but she was experiencing a severe postpartum mental health crisis. Because of this it's difficult to hold her legally responsible and declare her as the murderer of the kids.

Her condition is reportedly linked to postpartum psychosis and possible previously undiagnosed bipolar disorder. However, prosecutors argue that Clancy's actions showed that she was aware of what she was doing with the kids.

Her trial began in July 2026. At the time of writing, it's still underway with testimony from her former husband, Patrick Clancy, and medical professionals. Both Lindsay and Patrick have also filed separate lawsuits against healthcare providers.

Early signs and the beginning of Lindsay Clancy’s mental-health struggles

As explained previously, Lindsay Clancy was a nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital. She met Patrick Clancy around 2013, and the two tied the knot by 2016. They had their first baby named Cora in 2017, followed by Dawson in 2019 and Callan in 2022.

Lindsay's account now says that she started experiencing postpartum anxiety right after having her first child. And when Dawson was born, she reportedly suffered even more with problems like anxiety, insomnia, exhaustion and reduced motivation.

Her husband, Patrick, also recalled how Clancy faced health issues as she would think of herself as super productive and spent a lot of time cleaning and decluttering. These issues were then viewed in legal claims as possible early signs of bipolar disorder.

The most serious deterioration in Lindsay Clancy's mental health came after Callan’s birth. In the early postpartum period, she became highly active like exercising too much, running, using her Peloton and completing a five-mile race about five weeks after giving birth.

Later, legal filings suggested that this unusually high level of activity might have been a sign of hypomania. But by late summer and early fall of 2022 her condition seemed to shift.

Clancy became increasingly anxious, struggled to sleep, felt exhausted and lost motivation. She also became depressed, with much of her worry connected to the thought of returning to work.

September 2022 to January 2023: Lindsay Clancy's rapidly worsening mental-health crisis

By September 2022, Lindsay Clancy's mental health condition had deteriorated to a great level. Around September 12-15, she began psychiatric care and scored 23 on the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale which indicated severe symptoms.

Reports suggest that she was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder and related depression/anxiety and was prescribed Zoloft. Since Clancy was breastfeeding, she started the medication late.

After an increase in the dosage, Clancy didn't sleep for almost two days. During this time, she was constantly experiencing anxiety and racing thoughts, which led to the medication being stopped.

During October and November 2022, insomnia, exhaustion and anxiety continued. She visited an emergency department for severe sleeplessness and was prescribed or tried several medications. She also experienced emotional numbness, a sense that her surroundings were unreal, intrusive thoughts and fears that something terrible could happen.

By December 2022, Clancy's mental health became much worse. After she started taking Seroquel, Patrick reportedly told doctors that her mental health had declined sharply. The woman said that she heard voices in her head, telling her to die and that she will never be normal again.

Not just this, but Lindsay Clancy also had thoughts about suicide. She felt her children were in danger and that they would be taken away from her. So, she reached out for help and December 31, she went to Massachusetts General Hospital and was then voluntarily admitted to McLean Hospital for about five days. She was released on January 5, 2023.

Doctors identified that Clancy has depression and sleep problems. However, they didn't see clear signs of psychosis during her stay. Later lawsuits claimed that her treatment involved many different providers.

There were around 13 psychiatric medications over several months, with poor coordination between them. The lawsuits argue that important signs of possible bipolar disorder or postpartum psychosis may have been missed.

January 24, 2023: The final day and the deaths of Lindsay Clancy's children

On January 24, 2023, Lindsay took five-year-old Cora to a pediatric appointment. Patrick stayed home with Dawson and Callan, and Lindsay appeared to interact normally with people at the appointment.

When she returned home, everything seemed fine, as she was spending time with the kids, like making a snowman and doing art activities. Clancy even exchanged photographs with Patrick and her mother.

At about 4:02 p.m., Lindsay searched online for information about children’s Miralax. Around 4:13 p.m., she searched for takeout from ThreeV restaurant in Plymouth and checked its travel time using Apple Maps.

At approximately 4:53 p.m., she messaged Patrick, who was working downstairs, suggesting they order food because it had been a long day. Around 5:10-5:15 p.m., Lindsay called the restaurant and placed the order. She also asked Patrick to stop at CVS for medication for Cora before collecting the food.

Patrick left the house and said he would be back soon. While he was at CVS, his wife called and asked whether a generic medication could be substituted. Now the prosecutor alleges that Lindsay Clancy took Cora, Dawson and Callan to the basement during her husband's absence.

By 6:10 p.m., Patrick was home and found it was unusually quiet. He discovered blood and an open bedroom window before finding Lindsay seriously injured outside.

Lindsay told Patrick she had attempted suicide and jumped from the window. When he asked about the children, she directed him to the basement. A 911 call was played during the trial, as Patrick found his kids in a terrible state and removed the bands.

Cora and Dawson were later declared dead that same evening while Callan was airlifted to Boston Children’s Hospital. The kid briefly revived but died on January 27, 2023 due to brain injury. As for Lindsay Clancy, she survived but ended up being paralyzed from the waist down.

The main question: Was this a planned crime by Lindsay Clancy or the result of her psychosis?

This is where the case moves beyond the question of what happened and into the question of why it happened and whether Lindsay Clancy can legally be held responsible for causing the deaths of her three children.

Her husband, Patrick Clancy, has always said that she was a caring mother and wife who ended up being seriously ill. He even publicly expressed forgiveness and later discussed her deterioration in a detailed 2024 interview with The New Yorker.

Patrick has also testified for his wife's medication and the experiences she had. He regrets not keeping her at the hospital for a longer duration, as it could have helped her and might not have led to such a tragedy.

After the killings, Lindsay Clancy reportedly told Patrick that she heard a man's voice in her head. He told her it was the "last chance" so she must kill herself and her kids. She described this as a moment of psychosis.

But then the prescriptions argue that Clancy searches for restaurants, travel-time checks, and normal conversations. They suggest that the woman was aware of her actions.

Now, the defense agrees that Lindsay Clancy did kill her children, but she was not criminally responsible because she was experiencing a severe postpartum psychiatric disorder. Reports suggest that in 2026, Lindsay and Patrick filed separate medical-malpractice and wrongful-death lawsuits.

They allege that the providers failed at diagnosing her actual problem. The couple claims that signs were missed and that the developing illness was not taken care of. However, the providers have denied allegations of inadequate care.

As of August 15, 2026, Lindsay Clancy's lawsuit continues. It began in late July 2026 in Plymouth Superior Court, and now people are waiting for the final decision.
