The Love Hypothesis movie wrapped up production last year, and since then, not much has been heard about the romcom. However, Lili Reinhart confirmed on her TikTok that the movie will be released sometime this year. But no official promo for the movie has been released yet.

Directed by Claire Scanlon, the movie is adapted from Ali Hazelwood's beloved 2021 debut novel, which is also named the same as the upcoming film.

Much like Fifty Shades of Grey, The Love Hypothesis also began as a fanfiction, which was later modified to be a standalone book of its own. In this book's case, it initially started as a Star Wars "Reylo" fanfiction. For those who don't know, Reylo is the ship name given by the fandom for a romance between Kylo Ren and Rey. Initially, Hazelwood published the story online under the title Head Over Feet.

But years later, Ali Hazelwood, who was a neuroscience professor at that time, scrubbed off the explicit Star Wars references, renamed the character to Olive and Adam (a reference to Adam Driver), changed the title to its current form, and published it. The official logline for the book reads:

"When a fake relationship between scientists meets the irresistible force of attraction, it throws one woman’s carefully calculated theories on love into chaos."

While the movie was announced in 2022, i.e., a year after publishing, it wasn't until last July that the movie began filming, as the actors were announced.

Reinhart joined the cast of this movie last July along with director Claire Scanlon, producer Elizabeth Cantillon, and scriptwriter Sarah Rothschild. Author Ali Hazelwood released the following statement at that time:

“Honestly, I still can’t believe this is happening? Elizabeth Cantillon, Claire Scanlon, and Lili Reinhart have all created, produced, or starred in works that I’m absolutely feral about, and I am beyond honored that they’re choosing to bring their talent to this project."

She continued:

"Books and films are very different media, and I have complete trust in this brilliant team. I cannot wait to see the final product they’ll come up with. I hope they have as much fun filming as I had while writing the book.”

Reinhart impressed everyone last year with her award-winning turn as Harper in Hal & Harper. Apart from that, she also played Betty Cooper in all seven seasons of Riverdale. In this movie, she is playing Olive Smith, a character inspired by Daisy Ridley's Star Wars character, Rey.

Bateman's casting was announced just a day after Reinhart's casting. His character, Adam, as mentioned earlier, is named after Adam Driver. This is a reference to the book's fanfiction origin. You may know him for playing Hercule Poirot's friend Bouc in Murder on the Orient Express and its sequel, Death on the Nile.

In The Love Hypothesis, Tom Bateman is playing Dr. Adam Carlsen, a character described as "a young hotshot professor–and well-known a**".

Jaboukie Young-White is playing Malcolm, Olive's roommate, inspired by the character of Finn (John Boyega). In the book, Malcolm ends up in a relationship with Dr. Holden Rodriguez, who is influenced by Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac). However, it is unknown if Rodriguez is appearing in the big-screen version of The Love Hypothesis or not.

Jaboukie is known for appearing on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah as himself and his recurring role of Elijah in Abbott Elementary.

One of Adam's trusted confidants, Dr. Tom Benton, starts off as a likeable figure at the start of the book. But he is the biggest thorn in Olive's side in the second-half of The Love Hypothesis. Based on this character description, it seems that the casting team has found a perfect Tom in Arty Froushan, who plays Buck Cashman in Daredevil: Born Again (both seasons 1 and 2).

  • Nicholas Duvernay (Jeremy Langley)

Jeremy Langley is Olive's ex-romantic partner, who is this story's version of General Hux, who was played by Domhnall Gleeson in the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy. Duvernay impressed everyone in the last season of The White Lotus as Zion Lindsey, Belinda Lindsey's son.

  • Rachel Marsh (Anh Pham)

Anh is the best friend who gives Olive relationship advice without knowing that the latter's relationship with Adam is not real. Anh Pham is an expansion of the controversial Sequel Trilogy character, Rose Tico. Filipino-American actress Rachel Marsh is playing this character's big-screen version.

Marsh has played several supporting characters since her debut in 2018. The only exception being one of the main roles in the two-season Netflix comedy, Unstable.
