The Mosquito Bowl: Breaking down the true story behind Peter Berg’s WWII film

Netflix has released the official teaser of its upcoming film, The Mosquito Bowl, starring Nicholas Galitzine, Bill Skarsgård, Ray Nicholson, Dominic Bogart, Brent Comer, and Tom Francis. Directed by Peter Berg, famous for Lone Survivor and Very Bad Things, the upcoming film is based on a book titled The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II, written by Buzz Bissinger.

It is a real story of a group of college football players, named John McLaughry, Bob Bauman, Tony Butkovich, and David Schreiner, whose lives take a different turn after they join the military during World War II. As the war went on, their lives came together again, just before the Battle of Okinawa.

The Mosquito Bowl is based on the real lives of four college football stars. This includes:

Quarterback for Brown University, John McLaughry, played by Nicholas Galitzine (famous for Master of the Universe, Purple Hearts, and The Idea of You)
Wisconsin football player David Schreiner, played by Tom Francis (famous for Jay Kelly and You)
Wisconsin football star Bob Bauman, played by Bill Skarsgård (famous for It, Locked, and The Crow)
Purdue football star Tony Butkovich, played by Ray Nicholson (famous for The Benchwarmers, Smile 2, and The Beauty)

These four football stars decide to leave their football dreams and join the Marines after Pearl Harbor is attacked, serving in World War II. This also meant facing the harsh realities of war, which the Netflix film explores.

Their lives later came together during a football game played by Marines before the Battle of Okinawa, which became famous as The Mosquito Bowl, the title of the Netflix film.

The trailer shows the football stars adjusting to life during World War II, with scenes of them talking to each other mixed with scenes of gunfire and the football game. It gives a look at the war and what the young men went through during their time in the military.

In one scene, Galitzine's character is seen holding another soldier's hand, showing the support they shared during the difficult time. The trailer also has many happy moments, with the group singing, spending time together, and supporting each other.

Speaking about the film, Peter Berg said that it is very much based on real events and that it honors the Marines who sacrificed their lives during 1944 and 1945. In another statement reported by Tudum, Berg said that he wants to show love and care and people staying close to each other even during very difficult times. He added that the combination of strong emotions and difficult moments is what interests him most.

When is The Mosquito Bowl release date?

The Mosquito Bowl is scheduled to release in select theaters next month on October 30. Interested viewers can stream the movie a month after its original release date on November 25 on Netflix.
