The Players Club star Samuel Monroe Jr. passes away at 52 after struggle with declining health 

The Players Club star Samuel Monroe Jr. passed away at the age of 52 on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at a Los Angeles Hospital. His mother Joyce Patton took to Facebook to confirm his death. She wrote,

"“I want to thank all of my Facebook family and friends, new and old, for praying for Samuel Monroe Jr., my son. But today God called him home. Please honor my final request to pray for the family especially his 3 children."

Monroe was hospitalized in April with MRSA pneumonia and meningitis, and he has spent four months fighting for his life at the hospital. His family revealed that his meningitis was left untreated for eight months. Apparently, he contracted it when he was filming in Las Vegas and was initially misdiagnosed at multiple hospitals.

Unfortunately, by the time he was diagnosed, it had spread to his spine and brain, resulting in frequent seizures in the past few weeks. The doctors had also warned his family that he might spend the rest of his life in UWS (unresponsive wakefulness syndrome). Samuel Monroe Jr. is survived by his wife, Shawna Stewart, his mother, and three children.

What caused Samuel Monroe Jr.'s death?

Actor Samuel Monroe Jr. passed away at the age of 52 after a battle with declining health. Monroe was hospitalized in April after he developed meningitis and MRSA pneumonia. Apparently, he had to also go through dialysis to save his kidney. According to the Cleveland Clinic, meningitis is described as a condition that

"Meningitis makes the protective layers surrounding your brain and spinal cord swell. Bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites and noninfectious conditions can cause meningitis. Common symptoms include fever, neck stiffness and light sensitivity."

According to Mayo Clinic,

"Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection is caused by a type of staph bacteria that's become resistant to many of the antibiotics used to treat ordinary staph infections."

Samuel Monroe Jr.'s condition further deteriorated in July 2026. According to his wife, Shawna Stewart, he suffered more than 20 seizures around July 30, which caused swelling around his brain. He underwent three brain surgeries. The doctors warned he might slip into a vegetative state for the rest of his life.

Monroe Jr. was born on November 28, 1990. He has been a part of multiple projects, including Menace II Society, Set It Off, Tales from the Hood, Out All Night, and The Players Club, to name a few.

Previously, Monroe Jr.'s mother Joyce Patton filed a court petition to establish a conservatorship over the actor and take control of her son's medical and financial affairs (via TMZ). However, his wife had opposed the arrangement and denied misuse of funds, and alleged that Patton's petition was driven by financial motives.
