Prime Video's latest action thriller, The Runner, is a reminder that people are rarely what they seem, and underestimating someone can be a big mistake. The movie revolves around Maia, a mother to Noah, played by Gal Gadot.

While the beginning of the movie is pretty calm as she drops her son off at school, her life turns upside down after Noah gets kidnapped, and in order to save her, she is asked to kill Tafa. Maia does her absolute best to reach the location on time and do what the caller asks her to. And in the end, she is able to save her son.

But the story doesn't end here, as she goes on the hunt to find the caller, and thanks to Noah, he is caught. But did Maia actually follow his instructions? Turns out, Maia was leaving instructions all along through others and faked the killing in the end, proving why she is more than what meets the eye.

At the start of The Runner, Maia, a lawyer and a mother, is seen dropping off her son, Noah, at school. She even gets a call from Ted as the two talk about children. After ending the call, she starts running. Suddenly, she receives a call from Noah's number, and while she thinks it's her son, after picking up the call, she comes to realize that her son has been kidnapped and her movements are being tracked.

The caller asks her to talk to nobody and follow only his instructions. Later, she is asked to open the bin and take out a package that has a gun. As for what the caller wants, he asks her to kill Radian Tafa, a witness who is under heavy protection at the Excelsus hotel, and she is one of the six people with access to him.

While Maia tries her best to convince him that she can't do it, the caller gets angry and asks her to apologize. On the other hand, Noah's glucose numbers drop, and the caller gives him an extra dose.

In The Runner, Maia soon realizes that her phone is hacked and the caller knows everything about her, including that her mother killed her father, which she doesn't agree to. Maia, on the other hand, just wants to pass on the message to Ted about her son's kidnapping to make sure they can come up with a plan. But despite her efforts, The Runner proves that this is not Maia's day, as she struggles to get the message across.

The caller asks her questions about her family, her therapist, the encrypted app she uses to communicate with her mother, and the private file that contains photos of her. Maia understands that the caller can't see her but can track her, and she uses the train to reach the location.

However, a guy steals her phone, and she loses the connection to the caller. While she catches the train again and gets her phone back after fighting with the guy, she also catches the attention of the police, who are after her.

The Runner shows Maia running through the train, going to the church, and jumping off the bridge just to reach the location in order to save her son, with the police behind her. When the caller doesn't trust her word and decides to take the matter into his own hands, Maia tells him that her mother didn't kill her father, but instead she was the one who killed him, as he was not afraid of anyone and used to abuse her mother.

After listening to her, he finally gives Maia one more chance. With time running out, she races to the hotel and finally reaches Tafa, shooting him and saving her son.

The Runner ending explained: Maia proves why the caller shouldn't have underestimated her

The Runner changes the whole story in the final few minutes. During her train ride, Maia asks a person on the train to call Ted at Star Chambers using a landline and tell him that Noah will be killed if Maia doesn't shoot Tafa. She also uses her lipstick to leave another message.

At the hotel, Maia is told about the blank bullets, which she uses to fake Tafa's death with fake blood. The caller sees it during their video call and believes that Maia has actually killed Tafa. Thanks to Noah, he recognizes him, and the caller gets arrested in the end, as Maia tells him that she's not a killer. The bomb also gets decommissioned, saving everyone.

Additionally, Tafa ties Mr. Boyd and his associates to the murder of Miss Summerhill and Miss Patel. The ending shows Maia receiving another call from an unknown number, but this time, she chooses to throw the phone away instead of answering it.
