Frances Haugen's mother was 'upset' after the release of The Social Reckoning because the filmmakers cast a brunette actress, Mikey Madison, to play her daughter, even though Frances is actually blonde. In an interview with People Magazine, Frances lightheartedly quipped,

"My mother was very upset that they cast a brunette. Like, ‘How will they overcome blonde stigma? Blonde people can be smart too!’"

However, Mikey clarified that she played Aaron Sorkin's version of Frances rather than a direct copy. Frances added that her mother believed the film would cast her as a typical nerd and then remarked that she's her mother, so nothing more can be done.

According to People Magazine, Frances Haugen's mother reportedly became upset over the filmmaker's casting decision and said her daughter would face the challenge of breaking the stereotype attached to blonde hair. Her mother further added that people often forget that blonde individuals could also be intelligent. She said,

"My mother thought they typecast her as a classic nerd."

She added,

"That’s my mother, so what are you going to do?"

However, she praised Aaron and said that she deeply valued cinema as an art form because of its power to inspire and bring people together. The Facebook whistleblower explained that she understood how difficult it was to make a film and respected the effort involved. She added that she had confidence in Aaron and trusted the filmmaking process.

Why did Aaron Sorkin feel that Mikey Madison is perfect for The Social Reckoning?

Cineworld Cinemas revealed that during casting, Sorkin was completely convinced that Mikey was right for the role of Frances. He said that he never spoke about or considered anyone else. He compared gaining an actor of her level to being handed the keys to a Ferrari and added that his only responsibility was to ensure he didn't crash it.

Variety reported that during the promotion of The Social Reckoning, Aaron and Mikey sat in a joint interview and discussed the challenge of creating a film that could entertain audiences while addressing divisive topics. Mikey explained how she played Frances even though she had not yet met her.

According to Reuters, the director highlighted that Madison had felt natural in the role, especially when paired with Jeremy Allen White. He had shaped their dynamic to resemble a cosy and private world that was suddenly pushed onto a chaotic global stage. This approach had required actors who could anchor the human side of the tech scandal and carry the personal story with steadiness and clarity.
