The Thick of It star Chris Langham dies at 77, leaving behind a complicated legacy

BAFTA-winning actor, writer, and comedian Chris Langham has died at the age of 77. According to his obituary as announced in The Times, the actor passed away on June 24, 2026, after battling pancreatic cancer. His death was publicly reported on September 3, 2026.

Known for playing Hugh Abbot in the BBC sitcom The Thick of It, the actor built a successful career until a criminal case in 2005 altered his professional life. Langham faced 15 charges, which included downloading indecent images of children. He was convicted in 2007. At the 2007 trial, Langham admitted downloading the material but denied having a s**ual interest in children.

He explained that he had searched for those images for research purposes for the BBC comedy series Help. However, his co-star Paul Whitehouse contradicted the evidence. The court rejected his explanation and found him guilty of all charges.

Born on April 14, 1949, Langham was an actor, writer, and comedian. While his father, Michael Langham, was a theatre director, his mother, Helen Burns, was an actress. He began his television career as a comedy writer, and he worked with Spike Milligan. He then joined The Muppet Show as a writer before becoming a part of Not the Nine O'Clock News.

However, his breakthrough role was in the BBC sitcom The Thick of It. He played Hugh Abbot, a government minister who was caught amid the complexities of British politics. In 2006, he won a BAFTA for Best Comedy Performance for his role in The Thick of It.
