The Whisper Man ending reveals truth about Jake's abduction and a heartbreaking sacrifice

Netflix's latest crime thriller, The Whisper Man, follows a widowed crime writer, Tom Kennedy, whose eight-year-old son, Jake, is kidnapped. The case seems to be linked to a decade-old case of a convicted serial killer known as The Whisper Man, who was arrested by Tom's father, Pete.

However, the twist is that The Whisper Man is still behind bars, so who is responsible for the crime? Is it someone trying to imitate the serial killer, or is it The Whisper Man himself, or someone he is familiar with?

Desperate to find Jake, Tom turns to his estranged father, Pete, for help. Pete is a former police detective who arrested The Whisper Man.

Initially, the suspicion falls on a local crime junkie, Norman Collins, who collects murder memorabilia. Tom caught him trespassing on his basement. Suspicion further raises when Tom finds out he is on the visiting list of The Whisper Man's cellmate. However, Norman makes it clear that he has nothing to do with the abduction.

Tom and Pete later find a mysterious body in the basement. Turns out, it was of Tony Smith, Whisper Man's fifth victim. They also find the corpse of a man named Dominic Barnett, who was buried in the walls.

Soon, viewers find out that Norman made a deal with Whisper Man, trading him something in return for a visit to Tony Smith's mummified body. Barnett was an outside liaison who rented the home and gave tours of the building. However, when he mocked Norman during a visit, Norman lost his cool and murdered him.

Norman refused to admit that he was behind Jake's abduction. He kills himself in front of Amanda and Pete to avoid arrest.

Jake's father, Pete, then speaks to the Whisper Man himself, Frank Carter, who clearly has been obsessed with the former detective. He sent him hundreds of letters. When Tom finds the letters, he initially thinks Pete is working for Frank, but in reality, Pete kept those as a reminder of his setbacks in life.

Eventually, Pete and Amanda crack the case. They find out from an old footage of a police psychiatrist's interview about Frank's wife and son. Turns out, his son is called Frank Carter Junior or the New Whisper Man.

While Amanda goes to the home of the police psychiatrist, Pete returns to interview Frank once again. Pete tells him that he would bring his son if he told him where they kept Jake. While Amanda reaches the house, she finds a mysterious man, and it's none other than Frank Carter Jr. She finds the psychiatrist's body in a barrel. He then chases Amanda through the halls. He stabs her and escapes with Jake.

Pete sacrifices his life to save Jake

Frank Jr. brings back Jake to where it all began. Tom and Pete chase the serial killer to Tom's home, and a brutal fight follows. They free Jake from the crawlspace, and Pete sacrifices his life. He commands Jake to run while the new whisper man stabs Pete with a screwdriver.

Tom realizes that the imaginary friend he called Mister Night in his childhood, who took him on adventures, was Pete himself. Jake's imaginary friend leads him into the house to hide from the killer. Tom chases the whisperman for the final fight. However, what helps him is his observation. Previously, he noticed there was a delicate section of the attic's flooring, causing Frank Jr. to fall through the floor.

In the end, Tom and Jake reunite and move to Pete's house to honor his memory. Elsewhere, Frank Sr. meets his son in the prison cell, and the reunion turns violent. He puts a shirt on his son's face and strangles him to death. Frank Sr. then sends a letter to Amanda. With Pete gone, he seems to have found his new favourite cop.

Now the question arises, who is Jake's imaginary friend? The movie ends on a bittersweet note. Tom goes through old photo albums as he finds out that Jake's late mother's childhood images look similar to the description of the imaginary friend.
