It cannot be denied that The Odyssey has huge expectations from the viewers, especially because of the contribution of Christopher Nolan. All the projects that Christopher Nolan has done through the years received an immense positive response from the viewers for the distinct, meticulous nature and realism that he brings out through the projects.
Right after the announcement of The Odyssey, the viewers have been eagerly waiting for more updates on the movie. However, things took a turn after the trailer of the movie was released. Though the cinematic approach of the movie has received a positive response, it was not the same for the dialogue.
The language used in the movie, snippets of which are present in the trailer, began to get backlash for its contemporary nature. Christopher Nolan, in a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, opened up about the reason he did not want the movie to sound ancient.
Christopher Nolan unveils the reason he did not want The Odyssey to sound ancient
The Odyssey is not adapted from any modern book; it is adapted from Homer’s ancient epic. Hence, many of the viewers expected the movie to follow the ancient language to embody the ancient epic of Homer. However, Christopher Nolan chose a different approach for the movie. He chose contemporary language, which was undeniably an unexpected aspect of the movie.
As a result, the viewers were quite disappointed and raised their voices about this approach to the movie. Christopher Nolan, in a recent interview, opens up about the reason he did not want The Odyssey to sound ancient. According to him, it was important to use a language that has “emotional” meaning rather than “intellectual” meaning. The language used in Homer’s epic is quite different from the contemporary approach in Christopher Nolan’s movie.

He also added that his goal was to add an “earthy narrative” to the storyline, hence choosing the type of contemporary English in the movie was a “no-brainer” for him. It cannot be denied that the contemporary language in the movie will be able to connect with a wider audience. Nolan also added that this approach in the movie might also backfire, and he thinks that it might have been a “naive” decision to move forward with the use of contemporary English.
There have been many speculations regarding this aspect of the trailer after it dropped. Fans had their own theories regarding Nolan’s choice to use contemporary English in the movie. With Nolan himself opening up about the reason for the use, it clarifies the whole debate surrounding it. The Odyssey is set to release on July 17 and has been filmed fully on IMAX.

The use of an IMAX camera for the movie depicts that it is going to be an immersive cinematic experience. The director is known for his dedication when it comes to his work; hence, it can be expected that the movie will be able to bring life to Homer’s epic in a distinct manner. The cast of The Odyssey is also an intriguing aspect, considering the array of distinct actors in the movie.
The very talented Matt Damon brings life to Odysseus’s character in the movie. Some of the other cast members of the movie are Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Robert Pattinson, etc. The movie will bring life to the story of Odysseus and his journey to return to Ithaca after the Trojan War. He has to navigate through dangerous challenges, including giants, while he tries to return to his family.
