Mehdi Hasan reacted after Democratic Congresswoman Haley Stevens faced pointed questions from reporters following her decision to endorse Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers over Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan's Senate race.

In a post on X on November 1, 2026, Mehdi Hasan wrote,

“This is her life now. Good.”

He was commenting on footage of Stevens appearing to face questions about her political reversal. In the clip, a reporter challenges Stevens over supporting a candidate whose policies she had previously opposed. Stevens is seen responding,

“Nothing is perfect.”

The exchange comes amid significant backlash from Democrats after Haley Stevens abandoned her support for Abdul El-Sayed, who defeated her in the Democratic Senate primary.

Why Haley Stevens switched support from Abdul El-Sayed to Mike Rogers

Haley Stevens defended her decision during an interview with CNN on November 1, 2026. She described the endorsement as “a weight off my shoulders” and said Abdul El-Sayed had been getting “angrier and angrier.”

CNN anchor Anderson Cooper questioned why she had changed her position so close to Election Day, particularly after reports that she had told Democratic colleagues only hours earlier that she still supported El-Sayed. Stevens cited concerns about El-Sayed's campaign, including his decision to campaign with left-wing streamer Hasan Piker.

The congresswoman had previously criticised Mike Rogers, describing him as a “rubber stamp” for Trump's MAGA agenda. When asked how she reconciled that position with her decision to support him, Stevens criticised what she described as anger and a lack of kindness in El-Sayed's campaign.

El-Sayed addressed the endorsement at a press conference outside a rally on November 1. According to The Guardian on November 2, 2026, he said he was less interested in the political dispute than in policy, adding that he did not think about Stevens at the end of the day. He also argued that people opposed to hate would not support Rogers, President Trump or Vice President JD Vance.

Abdul El-Sayed reports record fundraising

Abdul El-Sayed's campaign reported a record fundraising day following the announcement. The Guardian reported that the campaign raised $2.4 million on Sunday, November 1, with more than 26,000 people contributing for the first time.

Politico reported that the campaign had collected $1.2 million in the four hours after Haley Stevens announced her endorsement, making it the campaign's second-highest fundraising day at that point.

The New York Times and Siena College's final poll before the midterm elections showed El-Sayed leading Rogers by 11 percentage points. However, the survey was conducted before Stevens announced her decision to back the Republican candidate. The poll therefore did not measure any potential effect of her endorsement.
