On September 28, Donald Trump gave an interview to Time Magazine’s Senior Political Correspondent Eric Cortellessa and Editor-in-Chief Sam Jacobs at the White House. During the conversation, he covered a variety of topics, including the AI/Super Intelligence race, the Federal Reserve, the Supreme Court, midterm elections, war with Iran, and more.

After the publication shared a “lightly edited transcript” of the interview, many online shared their reactions, including professor, attorney, author, and political columnist Seth Abramson. He shared the link to the interview on social media and wrote in his caption:

“This is unreadable. He’s incoherent. I don’t think he successfully stated a single fact, answered a single question, or provided a single example of any point he wanted to make. Not that it was clear what points he wanted to make—because he was incoherent.”

Over the years, Abramson has written a series of nonfiction books on Donald Trump’s foreign policy agenda, political scandals, criminal cases, and more, including Proof of Collusion: How Trump Betrayed America, Proof of Conspiracy: How Trump's International Collusion Is Threatening American Democracy, and Proof of Corruption: Bribery, Impeachment, and Pandemic in the Age of Trump.

An overview of Donald Trump’s Time Magazine interview

Earlier this week, Donald Trump sat down for a 75-minute interview with Time Magazine, making it his 56th appearance on the Time cover. The magazine noted that Trump surpassed former President Richard Nixon, who held the “record for more than half a century.”

The U.S. President said that if he campaigned more before the midterm elections, Democrats wouldn’t be able to reach a majority in Congress.

“I think we'll do okay if I campaign, and I intend to. If I campaign… you don't give me enough credit. When I campaign, I give people a lot.”

If the opposition wins the House, Trump said they would “probably go after me,” and in return he would “go after them.” However, he praised New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, while calling his policies “crazy.”

“I say I like him; I think he's great, but I think his policies are crazy.”

When asked about his decision to ban MS NOW, Politico, and CNN from the White House, the POTUS doubled down on his “fake news” claim and on what he described as “bad story after bad story.” For those unaware, a judge ordered the media outlets to be reinstated. However, Trump dropped CNN yet again from the press pool covering his midterm campaign in Texas and Oklahoma.

About why the war with Iran was still ongoing, Donald Trump said:

“I could have stopped then, but I wanted to go further.”

He also blamed U.S. media for feeding Americans his initial timeline of four to six weeks. Trump also claimed that the war was “almost over,” while adding he might “annihilate” Iran.

“By annihilating Iran, we've created peace in the world,” the POTUS claimed.

Donald Trump also said that he was “not involved in politics anymore” when asked about the upcoming Israel elections and whether Benjamin Netanyahu should be re-elected.

“No, my primary thing—I do want to help them [the USA] defend Israel… People have written off Bibi [Netanyahu] many, many times, just like they've written off me many, many times. I wouldn't underestimate Bibi,” Trump noted.

However, he didn’t dismiss Netanyahu’s opposition, Gadi Eisenkot, and claimed he didn’t hear “bad things” about the former IDF Chief of Staff.

Donald Trump said that there were “phony threats” circulating about AI, or as he likes to call it, Super Intelligence/SI.

“The whole country is based on fake stuff because these people have Trump derangement syndrome,” he claimed.

Trump added that if AI labs did “bad things,” he would use DOJ and FBI as his “guardrail.”

“I would like to have data centers. It doesn't mean I want them right next to my house, but certainly I like them in my county… So many politicians are against them… But if we don't build them, they'll be built someplace else,” he claimed.

Donald Trump seemingly lost his cool when Time interviewers asked him about Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell’s longtime absence and health issues. He acknowledged many Republicans were disappointed before saying:

“This ain’t gonna be much of a story. Here we are doing this. You haven't asked me one f**king positive question. All of this. What about this? What about that? What about that? What about this? All negative. Why are you devoting all this time to the White House?” he said.

The POTUS continued:

“You know how I do, I do that out of my back pocket. I pay for a lot of it, but I fix it because the White House should look like that. It shouldn’t look like... half the wall was falling. It’s actually dangerous… Now it’s perfect, and I would say that I should be given credit for fixing the White House because I’m also doing very well with the war. I’m doing very well with another war that we already won, Venezuela. Do you notice you haven’t asked me a question about Venezuela?”

When he was reminded that they did, the President claimed it was he who brought up the topic and the reporter agreed that he “beat us to it.” While he mentioned the word “fake news” once again, Donald Trump claimed he had a “lot of respect” for the Time Magazine owners Marc and Lynne Benioff.

However, the U.S. President appeared to divert from the topic and mention his predecessor, Joe Biden, and questioned his pardoning of former Chief Medical Advisor Anthony Fauci. Donald Trump also claimed Chinese President Xi Jinping praised the White House renovation.

“So that’s just—well, Sleepy Joe gave pardons to everybody. He gave them to Fauci. He gave them to this. But you mean I’m not allowed to give them, but Sleepy Joe’s allowed to give them?” Trump asked.

He continued to state:

“OK, and people look at it. People came up. President Xi looked at it two days ago. He said, ‘This is beautiful. Much better than I…’ He was here 25 years ago with Obama. Think Obama knows it? Obama would not. He doesn’t know if something’s dirty or clean.”

Former President Barack Obama was an Illinois State Senator in 2001.

Eventually, he ended the interview by saying:

“Well, I hope I get a decent story. I don't think—you know, it's hard to get a good story. Every question's a hit. I don't know what the h*ll's wrong.”

Eric Cortellessa said that at the end of their chat with Donald Trump, he asked what the President would miss the most at the end of his second term; he replied, “This beautiful room.” Trump also claimed the polls were showing “fake numbers” and the pollsters were “corrupt… almost as corrupt as the writers.”

United States’ midterm elections are scheduled for November.
