“Try not to think about it”: Takashi Yamazaki addresses Godzilla Minus Zero's chances in Oscars' top category

After the New York Film Festival premiere, Godzilla Minus Zero has become the recipient of immense public appreciation for the storyline and visuals of the movie. Even with a comparatively smaller budget, the first movie, Godzilla Minus One, became a massive success and was also able to take the Best VFX award at the Oscars.

In a recent interview with Variety, director Takashi Yamazaki shed light on the chances of Godzilla Minus Zero’s success at the Oscars, noting,

The New York Film Festival premiere of Godzilla Minus Zero has created an immense uproar among the fandom. Many viewers have already pointed out that there is a possibility that this movie could get nominated for some of the top categories, such as Best Picture.

Takashi Yamazaki, in the interview with Variety, noted that even though he “tries not to think about it”, he cannot ignore the fact that the “possibility is not zero” of the movie getting nominated for the top category. He reminisces about Godzilla Minus One getting nominated and eventually taking home the award for the Best VFX category, which was quite an unexpected turn of events for them.

However, after the immense success of the first movie and the critical praise that it has received, the “possibility is not zero”. Rather, Takashi Yamazaki has “a little bit of hope” that Godzilla Minus Zero can also walk the same path of success as the first movie.

While speaking about the first movie in the interview, Yamazaki notes that they had “no idea” that they were “going to get Best VFX, or even be nominated,” as getting a nomination was “already a win”. Godzilla Minus One had tough competitors in the category of Best VFX, yet came out successful, etching a path for the new movie and for Takashi Yamazaki as well.

Just as the first movie, Godzilla Minus Zero also continues with the same family and continues the storyline of a similar “tumultuous” situation. The movie is set in 1949, when the Shikishima family comes across yet another challenging situation. It cannot be denied that, besides the breathtaking visuals, Godzilla Minus One was also able to grab the attention of the viewers with its distinct storyline, which captured the raw emotions of the characters.

The new movie also reportedly continues with this same tradition of blending action with the tragic drama. While speaking at CinemaCon this year, Takashi Yamazaki spoke about how this new movie will explore how the Shikishima family will come across “an even deeper despair”.

Just as in the first movie, Minami Hamabe and Ryûnosuke Kamiki will return to take on their characters, Noriko and Koichi, respectively. Some of the other cast members of the new movie are Nagasawa Masami, Kunimura Jun, etc. The primary filming location of the movie is in Japan. After a successful premiere at the New York Film Festival, the movie is set to be released on November 6 this year.
