Tyler Perry’s Doing Life trailer promises a powerful story where second chances come with a cost

Tyler Perry's Doing Life trailer is finally here. Starring Naomi Baker and Jay Reeves, it is coming to Netflix this October. Written, created, and directed by Perry, the film follows the life of a single mother, Anika, and a reformed ex-convict, Carousel, who forms an unlikely bond.

This urban drama will explore the struggles of a single mother and how she forms an unexpected bond with a reformed ex-con. Alongside Perry, Tony L. Strickland and Angi Bones serve as the producers. Apart from Baker and Reeves, the cast features Tamberla Perry, Jasmine Sergent, Danielle Moné Truitt, and Karen Obilom.

Doing Life will premiere on October 2, 2026, on Netflix. The official trailer opens with a flashback when Anika is working as a prison officer. During a violent riot in the prison, Carousel, an inmate, saves her. When he finally comes out of prison, they reconnect and begin to develop a bond, despite objections from Anika's family.

Doing Life trailer breakdown: A single mother, an ex-convict, and an unlikely bond

Doing Life trailer opens with a woman complimenting Anika and Carousel, saying they look good together. When Anika hesitates and reveals that they are not dating, the woman asks how they met.

The Doing Life trailer then jumps to a flashback, showing Anika working as a prison officer at the Holloway Correctional. When a violent riot breaks out during her shift, she gets injured and is eventually rescued by an inmate named Carousel. Anika later reveals that Carousel saved both her and her baby's lives.

When Carousel is finally released from prison, he tries to reconnect with Anika. However, Anika's family is far from welcoming, especially because of his dark past. Carousel reveals he was imprisoned for an attempt to murder. He further shares that he was only 14 and a part of a gang when he committed the crime.

Despite the objections, Anika and Carousel slowly begin to develop feelings for each other. Anika's mother strongly disapproves of their relationship and warns Carousel as she says (via Doing Life trailer),

"My daughter can do better without you."

As a single mother, Anika struggles to navigate her feelings, family concerns, and complex relationships. Carousel, however, reassures her, saying,

"When I told I got you, I promise I got you."

Despite Carousel's dark past, he tries his best to rebuild his life and takes responsibility for his wrongdoings. Meanwhile, Anika finds herself torn between her mother's growing concerns and her feelings for Carousel. Will Anika and Carousel get a chance to build a life together? Or will Carousel's troubled past continue to stand in their way?

Tyler Perry on the inspiration behind Doing Life

Speaking to People Magazine, Perry shared his inspiration behind the movie. He told the media outlet that he met both types of people, those who leave prison and try to rebuild their lives, and single mothers who do their best to provide a good life for their children.

"I was inspired by the resilience I’ve seen in both, and by the idea that sometimes the people we least expect can understand each other in ways no one else can.”

Perry further adds,

"I think that message of second chances and human connection feels especially meaningful right now.”

Tyler further praises both Baker and Reeves as the duo was able to showcase the vulnerability of their respective characters on screen.
