The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is eighteen years old; the first project in the entire franchise, Iron Man, was released in 2008. The film franchise is known for its quippy dialogue. However, there are some lines in these movies that stick with us viewers long after we leave the theaters. We at Soap Central would like to point out some of these quotes from the movies.

One such overlooked Marvel quote that stuck with me is from Doctor Strange (2016). This quote arrives in the middle of the movie as The Ancient One's soul departs her body. As that happens, Stephen Strange tries to convince her to not leave, and tells her that he is not ready to protect Earth from Dormammu. To this The Ancient One says the following quote:

"We don't get to choose our time. Death is what gives life meaning. To know your days are numbered and your time is short. You'd think after all this time I'd be ready. But look at me. Stretching one moment out into a thousand... just so that I can watch the snow."

This Marvel line works in two ways. It gives Stephen the push to finally ask Baron Mordo for help in stopping Dormammu. At the same time, The Ancient One also opens up to Strange, telling him that she is still not ready to die, even if she knows that what makes everything special is that there is an end.

Other Marvel quotes that prove that these movies are just more superhero stories:

Here are some other deeper quotes from movies featuring Marvel Comics characters. This list includes quotes from both MCU and Non-MCU movies:

"Everyone fails at who they're supposed to be, Thor. The measure of a person, of a hero, is how well they succeed at being who they are." - Avengers: Endgame

This quote is one of the major highlights of Avengers: Endgame. Thor and Rocket Raccoon travel back to 2013 to extract the Reality Stone/Aether from Jane Foster's body. As that happens Thor sees his mother, Frigga, and realizes that they are on the day she would eventually die in Thor: The Dark World.

He sneaks up to Frigga, who instantly recognizes that this version of her son is from the future. Thor shares with his mother that he executed Thanos too late, and that he feels empty. Thus, Frigga motivates Thor by saying that true success relies on how well one manages to live up to how they saw themselves.

People who lead two separate lives for their profession always find this Marvel quote very special because they feel like failures for not living up to their ideals.

"What is grief, if not love persevering?" - WandaVision

A line so beautiful and deep that this quote has managed to strike a chord with people. The line arrives in the eighth episode of WandaVision as Agatha forces Wanda to explore her past. The scene in question is set between the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War.

Wanda is still grieving Pietro, who died in the last act of Age of Ultron, and she is watching a sitcom. Vision joins her in watching the sitcom, as Wanda tells the Android Avenger that she is feeling only grief. This is when Vision drops those wise words.

The reason why this specific 2021 Marvel quote resonated with viewers is that it arrived at the right time. WandaVision streamed in 2021, as the pandemic was still raging across the world, and scores of people were still losing loved ones.

"We never lose our demons, Mordo. We only learn to live above them." - Doctor Strange

The first Doctor Strange movie is filled with lines that are wise, but they are overlooked. This line arrives in the first act of the movie as Mordo tries to convince The Ancient One to admit Strange as a student. She is reluctant because Stephen reminds her of Kaecilius (Mads Mikkelsen). Mordo cites himself as an example of someone who hasn't fallen to the dark side despite his tragic past.

The Ancient One tells Mordo that one cannot rid oneself of one's demons; the only thing one can do is not act on one's dark thoughts.

"With great power comes great responsibility" - Spider-Man

No list of deep Marvel quotes will ever be complete without this iconic Spider-Man quote. The line uttered by Uncle Ben in the 2002 movie is not the first time the "Great Responsibility" line has been linked with the Wall-Crawler. The line has been around since the very first Spider-Man comic, Amazing Fantasy #15 (1962).

The essence of this line is simple: it is one's responsibility to help others if they have the power to do so.

"No one ever talks about it. They just do it." - X-Men: The Last Stand

While the previous quotes on this list were deep and inspirational, this one isn't inspirational in any way. Instead, it is dark and sadly it continues to be relevant even today. These words are uttered by Magneto in the much maligned third movie from the 2000s Marvel's mutant franchise, X-Men: The Last Stand, which released twenty years ago in 2006.

The scene is that of a mutant rally in which the pacifist speaker tries to convince an agitated audience that the cure is not compulsory. However, Magneto/Erik Lehnsherr, who is part of the audience, claps back, saying that a genocide is never openly presented as one. He continues as the speaker is flustered:

"It's only that you realize, while you were talking about organizing and committees, the extermination has already begun. Make no mistake, my brothers. They will draw first blood. They will force their cure upon us. The only question is, will my brotherhood and fight, or wait for the inevitable genocide? Who will you stand with - the humans... or us?"

It should be noted that Erik Lehnsherr is a German Jewish holocaust survivor who saw and experienced the N*zi persecution first hand. Thus, it makes sense that he would say these words.

However, these lines ring true even in 2026, as we see countless wars and genocides being carried out. Thus, even if we don't look back at The Last Stand with fondness, this quote deserves to be on the list of all time great Marvel quotes.
