South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have revealed the reason behind making President Donald Trump a main character in the latest season of the adult animated comedy series.
During a video spot for the 19th Television Academy Honors, which aired on May 20, the duo discussed their role in the comedy world and said:
“We’ve always known that our job was, we’re supposed to be the joker. You need that. You need someone just making fun of things. It’s a great thing to be able to be. And unfortunately, right now, we have a president who thinks his job is to be the joker.”

Stone then reflected on the inclusion of Trump’s character in the 27th and 28th seasons. He said:
“And so that’s why we dove into the [27th and 28th] season and actually put Trump in there and Jesus and started talking about Christian nationalism and all that stuff.”

When was Donald Trump first introduced as a character in “South Park”?
President Donald Trump was first introduced as a cartoon character in South Park during the Season 5 episode titled The Entity. The episode reportedly aired in 2001.
In The Entity, the character of Mr Garrison runs for President of the United States and uses Trump's campaign style. His appearance is made to match the politician, sporting an artificial tan and a blonde hairstyle.
In the same episode, Donald Trump appears as a businessman who is impressed by Mr Garrison’s new gyroscope transportation invention. However, Trump didn’t appear as a main character until Season 27 titled Sermon on the 'Mount' aired in 2025.
South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone showed him as an antagonist in the adult comedy series. He is shown in a bed with his lover and baby daddy, Satan.
In an interview with the New York Times, Parker explained that they added Trump not because they took a political turn but “politics became pop culture.” Parker added that he and Stone decided to lean towards the current administration because they felt it had become a “taboo” to speak against the Trump administration these days. He added:
“Trey and I are attracted to that like flies to honey. Oh, that's where the taboo is? Over there? OK, then we're over there... We just had to show our independence somehow.”
After Season 27 was aired, the Trump administration reacted negatively, describing South Park as a "fourth-rate" show that was "hanging on by a thread with uninspired ideas in a desperate attempt for attention".
South Park first premiered on August 13, 1997, on Comedy Central. It made its debut with its first season, titled Cartman Gets an Anal Probe. While speaking during a video spot for the 19th Television Academy Honors, Parker said:
“For 30 years, you’ve always had some group trying to tell you what you can and can’t say. And that group has changed. That group has been liberal. That group’s been Republican.”
The adult cartoon show also addressed the legal dispute between Paramount Global and Donald Trump. The plot showed Trump suing the town of South Park for billions after residents protested Jesus Christ's presence in the local elementary school.
