Democratic Texas Representative Jasmine Crockett gave congressional recognition to R&B musician Chris Brown as he made a stop at AT&T Stadium outside Dallas on Saturday with tourmate Usher. In the now-viral video, Crockett, 45, was heard calling Brown, 37, “a real one,” before adding:“We are here because of Chris Brown! We are experiencing Black joy at the highest level. And I wanted to make sure we document that at the congressional level. So, let’s give it up again for Chris Brown.”Jasmine Crockett lost the party primary for U.S. Senate to James Talarico earlier this year. Before that, Las Culturistas podcast hosts and openly gay comedians Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers discouraged Texas voters from donating to Crockett’s Senate campaign, with Rogers calling it a “waste” of money in a January episode.Amid the congresswoman’s praise for Chris Brown, 37, the singer-songwriter stood on stage grinning as the crowd gave him a huge round of applause. He then turned to the politician and hugged her before thanking her for the recognition:“I appreciate all the love. You know I f**k with y’all for real.”Fans are now defending Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers for their past take on Jasmine Crockett, as she gushed over Chris Brown, who has a controversial past including domestic violence allegations from his ex-girlfriend and pop icon Rihanna.“Y’all owe them gays, an apology; who said don’t donate to her,” an X user wrote.“Everyone say sorry, Bowen!!!” a fellow user commented.“The way people were going after Bowen Yang and his co-host for their Jasmine Crockett take was absolutely ridiculous. We can never go back to this kind of politics,” a third individual added.Others continued to chime in.“Two things can be true at once. Jasmine is weird for hanging with Chris Brown. Bowen and Matt are also weird for commenting on Jasmine w/ no substance, ignoring the data at the time (Jasmine had good favorables), and propping up James when they said they knew nothing about him,” a person wrote.“I wanna formally apologize to Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers when they said people shouldn’t donate to her campaign in January,” another person wrote.“Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers should apologize again for lightly criticizing Jasmine Crockett,” a netizen sarcastically commented.Crockett officially entered Chris Brown and Usher’s names into the U.S. Congressional Record and recognized their R&B career, legacy, and contribution. Texas Rep. Venton Jones and record producer RoccStar were also onstage while Jasmine made the announcement.Exploring further Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers’ past comments about Jasmine Crockett’s Senate campaignOn the January 7 episode of their podcast, Matt Rogers mocked California Governor Gavin Newsom and claimed that Democrats need populist leaders and not just ones who troll Donald Trump. From there, the comedian dismissed Jasmine Crockett’s Senate campaign.“Anytime a politician is making it too obviously about themselves, I’m already done. And don’t waste your money sending it to Jasmine Crockett. Do not do it,” Rogers stated.Bowen Yang weighed in and said, “I must agree.”Rogers added:“Let me just qualify the Jasmine Crockett thing. She is not gonna win a Senate seat in Texas… If Beto O’Rourke couldn’t do it, Jasmine Crockett is not gonna do it… It’s nothing against that. It’s just that she’s a politician… She is like very well-defined already… It’s my opinion that we are gonna need someone who is less defined at this moment and then rises up. Like I’m interested in this Talarico guy from Texas.”Their comments earned online backlash. Both podcasters took to their respective Instagram Stories on January 10 and apologized.Matt Rogers wrote that he had “great respect and admiration” for Jasmine Crockett and promised to “be better.”“Transparency and candor matter to me, especially on the podcast. I’m a very progressive person who cares deeply about winning these elections, but my phrasing was not right. I will be more thoughtful! I really do promise. I have great respect and admiration for Rep. Crockett, and I regret that my words suggested otherwise. I just want us to win and I will be better at finding ways to help,” Matt wrote.Bowen Yang reposted Matt Rogers’ IG Story and wrote that he regretted “cursorily” commenting and pledged to use his platform “more responsibly.”Representative Crockett never directly addressed Yang and Rogers’ remarks.
