Donovan Mitchell has been regarded as one of the top players in the NBA. He leads the Cleveland Cavaliers as their undisputed superstar guard and primary on-court leader. Commonly known as “Spida,” Mitchell was born in September 1996 in Elmsford, New York.

His father, Donovan Mitchell Sr., is a former minor-league baseball player who later worked in the New York Mets’ front office as director of player relations. His mother, Nicole, is a teacher of Panamanian and African American descent.

He has a younger sister named Jordan who plays lacrosse at American University. Micthell grew up around a baseball environment due to his father’s career.

Donovan Mitchell played high school basketball at Canterbury School in New Milford, Connecticut before transferring to Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, for his final two high school seasons. In 2019, Mitchell wrote in The Players’ Tribune,

“My mom used to drive me all over New York City and New Jersey on the weekends to play in AAU tournaments. Her and my sister really sacrificed everything, and I feel so bad now because 75% of the time I'd be asleep in the backseat, and then I'd wake up in the parking lot of a gym in the Bronx or in Brooklyn or somewhere, ready to play. My mom probably put like 500,000 miles on that old Toyota Camry.”

Micthell was selected 13th overall by the Denver Nuggets in the 2017 NBA Draft, his rights were immediately traded to the Utah Jazz. He established himself as a scoring guard, earning NBA All-Rookie First Team honors and winning the Slam Dunk Contest in 2018.

In September 2022, the Jazz traded Mitchell to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Mitchell agreed to a four-year, $273 million maximum contract extension with the Cleveland Cavaliers ahead of his wedding to Coco Jones.
