Floyd Mayweather was born in February 1977 as Floyd Joy Sinclair in a challenging environment in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He grew up surrounded by boxing, turning to the sport to escape a difficult childhood. Reportedly, his mother battled drug addiction and his father, Floyd Sr., served prison time for drug trafficking.

Mayweather started training at the age of six, with his father introducing him to the gym when he was a toddler. He taught him the basics even when he could not walk properly. By the age of six, he was actively training and competing in amateur bouts. His uncles, Roger and Jeff were boxing champions.

When his father went to jail, Mayweather lived with his grandmother and devoted his time in boxing. He won three U.S. Golden Gloves titles as an amateur despite dropping out of high school to support his family. He won national Golden Gloves championships in 1993, 1994, and 1996.

Mayweather’s first professional fight occurred in October 1996 when he knocked out Roberto Apodaca in the second round. He won six boxing championships in five different weight classes including Super Featherweight, Lightweight, Junior Welterweight, Welterweight twice, and Super Welterweight.

Big wins over Arturo Gatti and others built his star power. In his 2007 fight with Oscar De La Hoya, he won $25 million. His biggest earnings came from his mega-fights in 2010s.

Floyd Mayweather built his fortune transitioning from a mere fighter to his own promoter and making investments in real estate. He established Mayweather Promotions that gave him control over his paychecks, PPV revenue, tickets and merchandise sales. He also runs businesses and other ventures which contributes to his overall income even after retirement.
