Country music singer-songwriter Garth Brooks is reportedly looking to sell his entire music catalogue worth approximately $2 billion, according to the Wall Street Journal. It would include his publishing rights (songwriting) and recorded music rights (master recordings).

If he manages to pull through the sale, it would make Brooks, 64, the richest singer in the world, putting him only second to Jay-Z, who is worth $2.8 billion, as per Forbes.

As of June 2026, Garth Brooks has an estimated net worth of $400 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth. This places him third in the net worth list of country artists, behind Beyoncé and Dolly Parton.

Parade reports suggest that the country legend has sold over $200 million in records in the United States alone, making him the best-selling solo artist in the country’s history. In fact, he surpassed the Beatles to earn Diamond certifications for ten albums.

Besides Jay-Z, other millionaire recording artists include Taylor Swift at $2.1 billion, Paul McCartney at $1.3 billion, Bruce Springsteen at $1.17 billion, Rihanna at $1.03 billion, and Beyoncé at 1 billion.

Exploring Garth Brooks’ career fortune

According to Celebrity Net Worth, Garth Brooks earns over $90 million annually from tours and is one of the highest-paid celebrities worldwide. He made approximately $45 million between June 2017 and June 2018. For the next season, he earned $25 million.

Born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Brooks is the youngest child of oil draftsman Troyal Raymond Brooks Jr and country singer-actress Colleen McElroy Carroll, who recorded with Capitol Records in the 1950s and also appeared on the TV show Ozark Jubilee. He grew up with an elder sister and four older half-siblings.

Despite growing up in a musical family, teenage Garth was more interested in sports and played baseball, basketball, track and field, and javelin. In fact, he attended Oklahoma State University on a track scholarship before graduating with a marketing degree in 1984.

During his college years, Garth Brooks earned pocket money by singing and playing guitar at local bars and clubs. In 1985, a Dallas-based entertainment attorney heard about him and drove all the way to Stillwater, Oklahoma, to hear him perform and even offered to help produce his debut demo.

By then, Brooks was determined to pursue a career in country music and attempted to move to Nashville, Tennessee. His first attempt failed but he returned in 1987 and landed a record deal with Capitol Records. Two years later, he released his first self-titled studio album, which earned top spots on all country charts.

The album comprised career-making singles such as The Dance, If Tomorrow Never Comes, and Not Counting You. Around the same time, Brooks gained prominence as an opening act for Kenny Rogers.

Garth Brooks reached the peak of his career in the ‘90s by releasing back-to-back commercially successful albums, including No Fences, Ropin’ the Wind, The Chase, In Pieces, Fresh Horses, Sevens, and Double Live. Most of these were the highest-selling studio/ country albums at the time, alongside being chart-toppers.

Some of his most popular songs from the time include Friends in Low Places, Unanswered Prayers, Thunder Rolls, and Billy Joel’s cover of Shameless.

In 1999, Garth Brooks took a risk and stepped back from recording and performing. Instead, he began preparing for a film titled The Lamb, featuring his rock alter ego, Chris Gaines. He even dropped a promotional album called Garth Brooks in… The Life of Chris Gaines. Unfortunately, the entire project was a failure.

The following year, in October, Brooks announced his retirement, citing his focus on fatherhood. He made a stage comeback in 2007 in Kansas City. What was meant to be a one-show concert soon turned into nine shows.

That same year, the musician did a charity concert in Los Angeles for the victims of the 2007 wildfires and performed in five sold-out shows in a span of 48 hours.

After his youngest child graduated from high school in 2014, Brooks returned to the studio. He dropped the song, People Loving People, before releasing the album Man Against Machine. He also went on a world tour with his wife and fellow country singer Trisha Yearwood.

The success of the album and the tour encouraged Garth to release three back-to-back singles by the year's end, including Gunslinger, Fun, and Time Traveler.

He performed at a stadium tour and another Dive Bar Tour in 2018 and 2019, respectively. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Brooks and his wife earned proceeds from a Facebook Live concert followed by a CBS special where they donated $1 million to relief efforts.

Garth Brooks has not only earned his fortune through record sales but also through tours, residencies, master recordings, publishing, and long-term control of his catalogue. In fact, his first major world tour at the Wembley Arena in England in 1993 sold out, as did the comeback residency at Encore Las Vegas in 2009.

Throughout 2020, Garth performed at drive-in theaters across USA and Canada. Two years later, he did a residency at The Colosseum, Caesars Palace, Las Vegas.

Mr Brooks also has several Grammy nominations, two wins, and has been a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame since 2012. His other accolades include multiple CMA Awards, ACM Awards, Billboard Music Awards, American Music Awards, and being named CMA Entertainer of the Year seven times.

The veteran country artist not only made his fortune from his music but also occasionally from acting ventures and film productions. It is noteworthy that Garth Brooks signed a multimillion-dollar exclusive deal with Amazon Music in 2016.

For the unaware, Garth paid $125 million in divorce settlement to his first wife, Sandy Mahl, which is still regarded as one of the most expensive celebrity divorces.

Elsewhere, the father of four has had a real knack for real estate. Over the decades, he has bought and sold properties across Oklahoma, Malibu Beach, Florida, and Tennessee.

Today, amid reports of his potential catalogue sales, it is noteworthy that Sony purchased Queen’s publishing catalogue for $1 billion in 2024 and half of Michael Jackson’s for more than a billion. Other artists to have walked Garth Brooks’ path include Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, and Sting.
