Actor-director Chad Lowe and his producer wife, Kim Painter, are mourning the loss of their 13-year-old daughter, Fiona Hepler Lowe. The family shared a statement with Page Six on September 29. It read:

“We are deeply heartbroken by the loss of our beloved Fiona. She was a loving young girl who was smart, creative and loved to dance. She was adored by her sisters and she was deeply loved by her parents. In fact, she was the light of our lives. Her passing is devastating for our entire family and we ask for prayers and privacy at this time.”

The statement continued:

“If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, please reach out to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988.”

Chad Lowe, 58, was previously married to Oscar-winning actress and film producer Hilary Swank for nearly a decade. His “substance abuse” problem was one of the reasons for their divorce.

Chad Lowe has been married to Kim Painter, 52, since 2010. They have two more daughters, Mabel, 17, and Nixie, 10.

Exploring Chad Lowe and Hilary Swank’s relationship timeline

Chad Lowe and Hilary Swank first crossed paths on the set of their film Quiet Days in Hollywood. They tied the knot in September 1997. In 2000, Swank won an Oscar for Best Actress for her role in Boys Don’t Cry. However, she infamously forgot to thank her husband during her acceptance speech.

Last year, Chad Lowe appeared on the Still Here Hollywood podcast and recalled the aftermath of the moment.

“I can take you to that moment, and what people didn't see is that as soon as somebody gets up there, they start flashing a countdown of like, 30 seconds,” Lowe explained.

He continued to say:

“The look of terror and horror on her face as they were basically ushering her off, because she recognized that she didn't... I felt so bad for her. I didn't even really think about it from my perspective. I just felt so terrible for her. The first thing I said to her — she didn't need to thank me. I mean, she'd thanked me enough. Yes, there's an expectation publicly that you'll do that, but I didn't feel unappreciated. I didn't feel, you know, taken for granted or forgotten at all. I just felt for her.”

Hilary Swank later won another Oscar in 2005 for her role in Million Dollar Baby and her husband was the first person she thanked.

In January 2006, the couple announced their separation. In May, they announced their decision to divorce. It was finalized in November 2007.

In the August 2006 issue of Vanity Fair, Hilary Swank explained that Chad Lowe battled substance abuse but had been sober for three years.

“I knew something was happening, but I didn't know what. When I found out, it was such a shock because I never thought he'd keep something from me. And yet, on another level, it was a confirmation of something I was feeling that was keeping us from being completely solid. When I found out, I wanted to be there. I knew it was the most important time of his life. That's when he needed me most,” she explained.

The Ordinary Angels actress continued:

“I don't want to make it seem like that's the sole reason; there were other factors. But that just kind of blew it open. It made me look at things a lot deeper. That's when you realize it's not going to work… It's an enormous obstacle to overcome, and he's doing it. He's living a sober life. I know how difficult it is, and I'm really proud of his sobriety.”

Swank also dismissed the rumor that her success led to her split from Chad. She claimed Lowe was “very supportive of my career.”

“He is, I think, genuinely happy for my success… I think that any frustration for him stemmed from the lack of opportunities in his own career,” Hilary explained.

Back then, she also mentioned that she couldn’t imagine returning to the dating scene.

“I can't imagine going out right now and trying to find someone else to be with. When I told you I'm the happiest I've ever been, it's not because I'm getting a divorce. It's because I'm living in truth now. My happiness has stemmed from being brutally honest with myself, facing truth every single day, no matter how hard it is,” Hilary Swank added.

She also concluded by saying:

“It takes two to make something work or not work. I'm a person with my own faults and troubles. In the end, it just didn't work, but I would never look back on this relationship as failed. I look at it as 13 and a half years of success.”

In November 2006, Chad Lowe appeared on Extra and clarified:

“I was disappointed that details of our relationship became kind of public fodder. I've been sober for three and a half years, and I'm very grateful for that… It has been a tough year; it's been a very tough year, and not something that I expected - it's very humbling.”

Rob Lowe’s younger brother further noted:

“The one thing I do want to set straight is that I'm so grateful to Hilary for her support of me in a very difficult time in my life three and a half years ago. What hurt me more than anything is that people would think that she wasn't there for me, and she was… She was the love of my life; that's not something you just shove off. I will always love her.”

While Chad Lowe went on to marry Kim Painter and have three daughters, Hilary married Philip Schneider. In April 2023, Swank announced the arrival of her twins, Ohm and Aya, via Instagram.

Chad Lowe last posted about his daughter Fiona in November 2025 in honor of her 13th birthday.

“Celebrating Fiona officially becoming a teen today!! Keep dancing through life, FiBear! Love you soooo much!!” the post was captioned.

In an earlier post, the father of three wrote that being a girl dad is his life’s “greatest joy and privilege.”
