Christina Grimmie, the talented singer, songwriter, and YouTuber known for her appearances on The Voice, tragically passed away on June 10, 2016, at the age of 22. Her death occurred after she was shot by an obsessed fan in the head and chest during a meet-and-greet session in Orlando, Florida.

According to the reports, the late singer was shot three times by 27-year-old Kevin James Loibl, who killed himself after being tackled to the ground by Grimmie’s brother Marcus.

As per Loibl’s friend, his obsession with Grimmie was not healthy or normal. He also believed that Loibl spent most of his time watching her videos and monitoring her social media despite not having a Facebook or a Twitter (now called X).

Ahead of her 10th death anniversary, her family has been honoring her memory by organizing a series of legacy events. This includes Christina Grimmie Foundation’s 10 for TEN campaign, Grimmie Fest and a forthcoming documentary on her YouTube channel.

Christina Grimmie’s family honors her memory on 10th death anniversary

Christina Grimmie’s family has been honoring her memory with a month of commemorations, marking 10 years since she was fatally shot in June 2016, at an Orlando concert meet-and-greet.

They will be organizing a Grimmie Fest from June 5 to June 7 that will celebrate her life “with music, community and joyful activities.” Her brother, Marcus will also be performing with his own band called The Living Tombstone.

Her fans and friends are eagerly waiting for June 10, which will be officially observed as Christina Grimmie Day in New Jersey. The New Jersey Senate passed the resolution unanimously, honoring her as a Marlton native, talented artist and advocate whose legacy continues through her family’s foundation.

Grimmie’s father, Albert Grimmie, said while speaking to US Weekly that they are still in grief. He said:

“The grief itself is like this black marble in a jar, and the grief is going to be the same, but the jar is going to expand.”

He reflected on how he misses his daughter’s “excitement for life” and sense of humor. He remembered her calling “Grumpina” whenever she was mad or angry. Her brother, Marcus said that there’s not a day that goes by that he doesn’t think of his little sister.

At the time of passing the bill, Senator Latham Tiver said:

“Christina Grimmie was not only an incredibly gifted artist, but a South Jersey native whose kindness, talent, and passion for music touched millions around the world. She made New Jersey proud, and this resolution ensures her legacy continues to be remembered and celebrated here at home.”

In 2017, her family launched the Christina Grimmie Foundation to support families who have been affected by the tragedy of gun violence. The page noted that the foundation received its first grant in 2017 and by July 2025, it helped over 500 families with grants totalling nearly $600,000.

A report in the LA Times stated that Grimmie was shot by Kevin James Loibl around 10:30 pm on June 10. She was immediately rushed to the hospital, after which she was pronounced dead at midnight. Orlando Police Chief John Mina said:

“She was doing a meet-and-greet, just signing autographs and selling merchandise. This white male approached her and opened fire, striking her.”

Speaking on how Grimmie’s brother, Marcus, tackled the suspect, she said that his “very heroic actions” may have prevented further damage as he was in possession of more ammunition and a hunting knife.

Singer Adam Levine reportedly offered to pay for Grimmie’s funeral, which was held on June 16. He acted as her mentor on The Voice, where she finished in the top three in 2014 during Season 6.

She is survived by her father and her older brother. Her mother, Tina Grimmie, died in 2018 after battling breast cancer.
