American author and creative writing coach Tomi Adeyemi’s 2018 romantic fantasy novel Children of Blood and Bone is now being adapted into a feature film by Paramount. However, it hasn’t been a pleasant experience for the 32-year-old Adeyemi, who reportedly left the movie set “sobbing” and called it the “worst thing I’ve had to live through.”In a five-minute video posted on her social media on July 29, the bestselling novelist said:“I’m gonna post this, so, ideally I won’t have to talk about this anymore. What I’m about to share is not a secret to the people involved. It’s a reality that I’ve had to live with for about a year and a half, and everyone involved, at least at the highest level, has been made aware of this reality, and they haven’t done anything to make it better. If anything, they’ve only antagonized me, and I accept that. But I also accept that if I don’t say something, I think it’s just going to be worse.”Tomi Adeyemi continued:“I’m not gonna speak on what I endured to make it through the young adult trilogy, and I’m not going to speak about everything that I also suffered through or endured to make the adaptation a reality. I’m actually only going to speak about what happened after I left that set of my own film adaptation, hyperventilating and sobbing. There are many witnesses, so it’s not really a secret. I came back to America and suffered such severe somatic pain and so many panic attacks. And even though it feels awful to share this, it’s better to share it and have it known and understood before I see a bunch of you for this new book. So please understand, I never want to hear about this project again,” Tomi continued.Speaking about Paramount and director Gina Prince-Bythewood, Tomi Adeyemi, who co-wrote the screenplay, noted she has nothing to say about them and no longer cared about the adaptation; if anything, she was “trying to move on.” She added:“This video might make it worse, but I don’t know how it can be any worse. So, I’m just going to share that and let it live.”Earlier this month, Tomi Adeyemi hinted at a feud with lead actor Amandla Stenberg (Princess Amari) in a since-removed TikTok video. Her clip offered a glimpse of “The Tominators” group chat where fans asked why she wasn’t promoting the movie. The novelist said:“There is a reason I will not post anything about the adaptation of my work. That's all. From this point on, if you want to support me, you can purchase any edition of the trilogy at a local independent children's bookstore.”A screenshot of the author and the actor’s chat from February 2025 was also included. It saw Tomi Adeyemi tell Amandla Stenberg:“Do not ever use my name in an interview or video again. Do not text me. Do not call me.”Tomi Adeyemi’s screenshot also showed she had blocked Amandla Stenberg, who previously faced online backlash from the fans of the Children of Blood and Bone book over her casting and alleged use of colorism.At the time, Tomi Adeyemi hinted she hadn’t seen the movie and wouldn’t watch it.“I’m going to leave it at this. You are the only people I care about. I have fought for this for 14 years, and if you ever felt like I didn’t care about you, it was only because I could not speak to you contractually… It’s been painful holding this back from you all and I’m sorry if any of you thought I didn’t care.”Tomi Adeyemi also clarified in a comment:“I do not mind anyone going to watch the film. I wrote this for us. I fought for us. I'm just laying down my sword and officially separating my name because I can't keep being hurt and attacked behind the scenes.”Paramount purchased the rights to Children of Blood and Bone in 2022 and it was filmed between February and June 2025. Leading up to the production, Tomi Adeyemi promoted the adaptation on her social media. However, she was missing at CinemaCon 2026, where a Paramount panel offered a “first taste” of the movie, slated for a January 15, 2027, release.
