The Recording Academy has introduced five new categories for the 2027 edition of the Grammy Awards, including Best Asian Pop Music Performance.In the wake of the announcement, K-pop boy band BTS, aka the Bangtan Boys, rejected the category and have decided not to submit their music. All seven members took to their respective Instagram handles and posted the same message on their Stories in Korean. Its English translation reads:“We have decided not to enter the Grammys this year. I hope music itself can be heard and loved for what it is rather than being distinguished by region or language. Thank you to the army and everyone for always being with me.”BTS is not the first artist/band to refuse to enter the Grammy contest. Last year, country music star Morgan Wallen did the same, as did rapper-songwriter Frank Ocean in 2016.Now, amid BTS’ decision, their fans, nicknamed the Army, are also boycotting the Grammys, with the hashtag #SCAMMYS trending on X. The Recording Academy has yet to address the controversy.At the 63rd and 64th Grammy Awards, BTS was nominated in the Best Pop Duo/ Group Performance category for Dynamite and Butter, respectively. At the 65th edition, the band earned three nominations: Best Music Video for Yet to Come, Best Pop Duo/ Group Performance for My Universe in collaboration with Coldplay, and Album of the Year for Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres.Here are the artists who have rejected Grammys over the yearsLate Irish singer, songwriter, and activist Sinead O’Connor was nominated in four categories in 1991 and was scheduled to perform live during the ceremony. However, she pulled out last minute, citing “false and destructive materialistic values” in the music industry.Later that night, O’Connor won the Best Alternative Music Performance for her song, I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got, but declined to accept it. To date, she remains the only artist in Grammy history to do so. During her brief career, Sinead earned a total of 8 nominations.Frank Ocean has two wins and seven nominations. In 2016, he refused to enter his hit album Blonde during Grammy submissions and cited racism as the reason.“That institution certainly has nostalgic importance. It just doesn’t seem to be representing very well for people who come from where I come from, and hold down what I hold down… I think the infrastructure of the awarding system and the nomination system and screening system is dated. I’d rather this be my Colin Kaepernick moment for the Grammys than sit there in the audience,” Ocean said at the time.Morgan Wallen has zero wins from two nominations. In 2025, he refused to submit his chart-busting album I’m the Problem for this year’s edition. He never publicly explained his reason for the same.Back then, Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr shared in a statement:“We would love it if all artists participated in the Grammy Awards process because it raises awareness and the funds that allow us to serve our community. This includes MusiCares, our advocacy work, The Grammy Museum and much more. However, we realize that some artists prefer their art not to be judged in this way and as an artist-first organization, we respect that.”Mason added, “From an organizational transparency standpoint, we receive around 20,000 entries each year and feel as though there could be potential conflicts if we solicit specific entries.”In 2021, Drake submitted his music and was nominated in two categories: Best Rap Album for Certified Lover Boy and Best Rap Performance for Way 2 Sexy, featuring Young Thug and Future. However, before the ceremony, the Toronto native informed the Recording Academy he was no longer interested in competing and they withdrew the nominations.According to Billboard, Drake, Morgan Wallen, and even BTS’ decisions may have been a direct result of being under-recognized for years.The Rules & Guidelines handbook suggests that all voting and professional members of the Recording Academy can make entries. But the Academy “reserves the right to remove” those where the “submitter is not an individual who would be entitled to receive a nomination and/or, in the event of a win, a Grammy Award statuette.”Besides Best Asian Pop Music Performance, the other new categories include Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance, Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance, Best Latin Song, and Best Traditional Folk Album.Harvey Mason Jr’s statement reveals:“2027 is going to be an amazing year... and one that reflects the extraordinary growth we’re seeing across music. The changes advanced by our Recording Academy members speak to the breadth of today’s music industry and the many genres, crafts, and creators shaping it. We’re excited to see these updates come to life in the year ahead as we celebrate the music people who are driving music forward.”Notably, all BTS members have voting membership status with the Recording Academy since 2019.The 69th annual Grammy Awards will take place at Crypto.com Arena in California on February 7, 2027. Entries are open till August 21.
