All we know about Bill Mazeroski’s family

Bill Mazeroski was born on September 5, 1936 in Wheeling, a city in West Virginia. His full name is William Stanley Mazeroski.

He grew up in a Polish-American family in nearby eastern Ohio where his father Louis Mazeroski, a coal miner had once been a promising baseball prospect before a mining injury ended that path. His mother was Mayme Mazeroski and he had a sister named Mary.

He lived in Witch Hazel, Ohio in a small one-room house with no electricity or indoor plumbing. Ever since his childhood, Bill Mazeroski loved to play sports. He father played a major role in strengthening his baseball skills – often by throwing a tennis ball off a brick wall to sharpen his fielding skills and hand-eye coordination.

After graduating from Warren Consolidated High School in Tiltonsville, Ohio in 1954, he was signed by Pittsburgh Pirates. He met his wife, Milene through his work with the Pirates who worked as a secretary in the team's front office. Manager Danny Murtaugh had noticed his shy interest in her and despite a general rule against players dating office staff, he encouraged him to ask her out.

The couple eventually got married on October 11, 1958 at Sacred Heart Church in Braddock. They settled in Greensburg, Pennsylvania and lived there for almost 60 years, according to Bill Mazeroski’s wife obituary. After their marriage, she became a homemaker and was devoted towards her family. She loved feeding her loved ones and cooking was her favorite pastime.

The two welcomed two sons in their marriage – Darren and David and were later blessed with four grandchildren. In 2019, Bill Mazeroski and his wife moved to Lansdale to be close to their grandchildren.

Sadly, Milene passed away in May 2024 at Brittany Pointe Estates in Lansdale, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of the late Walter and Ruth Nicholson.

On the passing of Bill Mazeroski, Pirates chairman Bob Nutting was among many who paid him a tribute. He described him as:

“one of a kind — a true Pirates legend, a National Baseball Hall of Famer and one of the finest defensive second basemen the game has ever seen.”

No cause of death behind the legendary sportsman’s death has been revealed. However, reports suggested that he passed due to natural causes.
