Emmy Rossum has revealed that her ex-husband, Justin Siegel, gave her an ultimatum to either get married or break up when she was 21.
The 44-year-old music producer was Rossum’s first husband. After their divorce was finalized in 2010, she married television and film producer Sam Esmail in 2017.
During a July 8 episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast, they reflected on their relationship. She shared that Siegel was working with Interscope Records at that time. It was the place where the two met for the first time.
Emmy Rossum added that it had only been a few months when they had started dating, and she booked a role in the 2009 film Dragonball: Evolution, which was filming in Durango, Mexico. Before she left, he gave her the ultimatum, after which they got married. He said:
“I don’t know if the relationship is gonna survive the distance. So maybe we should break up or get married.”

Everything to know about Emmy Rossum’s first husband
During a recent appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Emmy Rossum revealed that her first husband, Justin Siegel, gave her a marriage ultimatum. She said it was a decision she later regretted after returning from filming Dragonball: Evolution in Mexico after six months.
According to the 39-year-old actress’ explanation on the podcast, she didn't want to break up at that moment because she was coming off two really rough heartbreaks, and abandonment was her “core wound.” She told the host:
“I literally had a flight that night to Durango, Mexico. At that moment, I thought to myself, ‘Well, I'm just coming off these two really rough heartbreaks.’ Abandonment is my core wound. I don't want that. That hurts me.”
Additionally, she thought at that time:
“‘Divorce doesn’t seem that complicated. Like, it’s probably pretty straightforward.’”

Subsequently, Emmy and Justin secretly tied the knot in February 2008 but kept their relationship largely private. After Siegel filed for divorce in 2009, their separation was officially finalized in December 2010.
When the couple met, the Phantom of the Opera actress was recording her debut pop album, Inside Out, while Justin worked in Artists and Repertoire (A&R) at Interscope Records.
Emmy Rossum recalled that they tied the knot at their home. Siegel printed a marriage contract he found online and hired an officiant to solemnise their marriage. She wore a white turtleneck she found in her closet, adding that she was:
"literally not hearing the smoke detector in my head being like, 'Don't do this. You don't have to do this.'"
Emmy said that Justin never visited her at the set, and when she returned, it became clear that they were not a match. They went ahead with their divorce in 2009. Emmy said that she did not intend to reveal her split with Justin at that time and she only told her mother, Cheryl Rossum, about it. Cherly is a corporate photographer and raised her daughter as a single parent in New York City.
Emmy married for the second time on May 28, 2017. She wed director and producer Sam Esmail in an intimate Jewish ceremony at the Central Synagogue in New York City. It was followed by a reception at the Guggenheim Museum. They share two children – a daughter (born 2021) and a son (born 2023).
Justin also moved on in his life and has been married to Tiffany Marie Brannon since September 2018. He keeps a low profile.
