Everything you need to know about Hayden Panettiere’s family
Hayden Panettiere’s sudden death has come as a shock to her fans and friends, many of whom are now seeking more details about her family, especially her estrangement from her mother, Lesley Vogel.
Hayden was born on August 21, 1989, in Palisades, New York, to Vogel and Skip Panettiere. Her parents are of half Italian descent, along with German and English. She also had a younger brother named Jansen Panettiere. He passed away unexpectedly in February 2023 at age 28 from heart condition complications.
Hayden Panettiere began her career as a child artist and was only four years old when she was cast in the US soap opera One Life to Live. She started modelling as a baby at eight months and was only 11 months old when she landed her first commercial for Playskool Toy Train.
In her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, Hayden has made various claims about her relationship with Vogel, one of which included being forced hard in her career after starting acting at the age of five.

Hayden claimed that her mother even superglued fake teeth into her mouth for an audition. Vogel acted as Hayden’s manager since the beginning of her career until she ended their professional ties at the age of 19 on the set of Heroes. Hayden told her mother she no longer want them to work together.
The Scream 4 star explained the incident to Jay Shetty during an interview with him in May 2026. She said:
“She came into my trailer during lunch when we were filming ‘Heroes,’ and I said to her, ‘I don’t want us to work together anymore; I just want you to be my mom.’
Vogel allegedly replied, “You owe me.”
Hayden added:
“And part of me was like, ‘Oh, I’m relieved that it was short, like, rip the Band-Aid off.’ But then it was like this dark looming cloud over my head going, ‘What does she mean by I owe her? What form of payment is she expecting?'”
Hayden later “found out” that her mother was expecting money. She shared that as of today the mother-daughter remained “sadly” estranged. Although she has a “great relationship” with her father.
Vogel publicly responded to the claims made by Hayden Panettiere in her This is Me memoir. According to a Page Six report, she called her daughter “entitled,” lacking in empathy and saying the drama was partly to sell books.
She said:
“There is a personality ‘style’ which manifests as a need for control, entitlement and a lack of empathy. The major fear is that someone will see through the mask they present to the world and discover who they truthfully are.”
Hayden Panettiere's father married a woman named Mekdem in 2017 after dating for two years. The Nashville actress shared a positive bond with her stepmom. Hayden served as a bridesmaid at the wedding at her hometown church in Palisades. Her brother served as a groomsman, and her daughter Kaya (now 11) was a flower girl.
