Late singer, songwriter, and YouTuber Christina Grimmie’s family has spoken out ahead of her tenth death anniversary. Her father, Albert “Bud” Grimmie, told Us Weekly on June 4:“We want Christina to be remembered for the person and artist she was, not just the tragedy… The grief itself is like this black marble in a jar, and the grief is going to be the same, but the jar is going to expand. So, my capacity to carry that grief has grown.”Albert also shared missing his daughter’s “excitement for life” and sense of humor, adding:“I used to be able to make her laugh, even when she was mad or grumpy. I used to call her ‘Grumpina,’ and then she [would be] like, ‘Dad, I want to be grumpy right now.’ She was funny… She always made people feel heard, and that’s something I try to do.”Christina Grimmie performed at the Plaza Live Theater in Orlando, Florida, on June 10, 2016. However, later that night around 10 PM, she was fatally shot (once in the head and thrice in the torso) by a 27-year-old obsessed fan, Kevin James Loibl of St. Petersburg, FL, during an after-show meet-and-greet. Grimmie later succumbed to her injuries at a local hospital. She was 22.Meanwhile, Christina’s older brother, Marcus, tackled the assassin to the ground, who then shot himself dead, before the authorities could take him into custody.Today, Marcus Grimmie manages and guest-performs in a band called The Living Tombstone, which is scheduled to perform at the first-ever Grimmie Fest, a three-day event (June 5-7) featuring a benefit concert and a fan meet-up in Christina Grimmie’s honor. Marcus told Us Weekly about the upcoming show:“We’re honoring her legacy and all the people she’s brought together and celebrating the impact she still has.”The Grimmie Fest is organized by the Christina Grimmie Foundation, which was formed by Albert in 2016, to help the victims of gun violence. The late Voice singer’s mother, Tina Milos, died in 2018 from breast cancer.More about Christina Grimmie’s older brotherAccording to Christina Grimmie’s Wiki Fandom, Marcus “Mark” Grimmie was born 15 months before her famous younger sister in Marlton, New Jersey, in December 1992. Considering their very small age gap, the siblings grew up close and considered each other their best friends.Their mother was a receptionist and their father worked at Verizon Communications. When Christina first began posting song covers on her YouTube channel, Marcus served as her guitarist. He later followed her on stage and also became her road manager.Since 2024, Mark has been a guest performer for The Living Tombstone and also produces music under the alias, mGrim. Christina Grimmie’s brother also performs with the band The Similar, fronted by Jonathan LaMarche and Thomas C Silvers. The 33-year-old is now married to Summer Grimmie. Marcus has 53,100 subscribers on YouTube. However, he is not very active on the platform, nor on X or Instagram. In the aftermath of his sister’s murder, Mark Grimmie was held as a “hero” by authorities and fans alike for tackling the gunman, who continued to open fire even after killing Christina Grimmie. At the time, reports revealed Marcus may have saved the lives of concertgoers and fans in the vicinity.Orlando Police Department’s public information officer, Wanda Miglio, said back then during a press conference:"Her brother is a hero."Ahead of the tragic outcome, Christina Grimmie and the band Before You Exit were signing autographs and selling merchandise.According to the authorities, Kevin Loibl traveled across cities carrying two handguns, loaded magazines, and a hunting knife to “shoot” Christina Grimmie. But there was no indication he knew the singer personally. Loibl’s motives were never really found. However, it was revealed he “lived like a hermit” away from his family and was seemingly involved in a 2014 domestic disturbance case involving his father’s girlfriend. However, he had no criminal record.Today, ahead of her 10th death anniversary, Marcus offered glimpses into his slain sister’s character, calling her “super goofy” and “great at impressions.”“The wild, wild web, as we call it, she was very unique for that time. She catered to the nerd gamer thing when it wasn’t as popular. She was very Christian but accepting of all this new-age stuff coming up… part of why she got [to where she did] was her personality. She touched people.”Christina’s sibling continued:“I don’t want people to forget how funny she was. Everyone loved her, and it was because she was a genuine, kind soul. There was no ego with her… She was constantly bringing people together.”Marcus shared that over the years many of Christina’s fans have become their close family friends, including a couple who met at one of her her concerts and later got married and another who sent the Grimmie family a big stack of emails and online messages from fans worldwide, all of whom noted how the artist “changed their lives.” In fact, her fandom has been raising funds through annual fundraisers on her birthdays.“We’ve raised over $50,000 in the last four years. I’m grateful she has such a great community, which doesn’t hang on to the tragedy. They are celebrating her life and her impact, and it’s contagious,” Mark noted.About fans and law enforcement tagging him as a “hero,” Mr Grimmie said:“I never agreed with it. I understand objectively what’s being said, but for me it’s like, ‘Well, I didn’t save her,’ so it’s hard to feel that way.’ It was just me and two dead bodies in an empty room until the police came. I just felt so alone. To see people come together… I don’t feel so alone,” he said of their foundation.Their father, Albert Grimmie, meanwhile said that his son did well that day and worse could have “transpired” if he didn’t intervene. He also explained that a shooting spree (49 dead and 58 injured) at an LGBTQ+ event, two days after Christina’s murder, further encouraged their family to launch a nonprofit dedicated to gun violence victims/ survivors.“The amount of love and compassion [we received] was really integral to our healing. We can help people so long as gun violence is an issue, and as long as we’re breathing, that’s what we want to be doing,” the dad of two stated. It is noteworthy that a bill is pending to be voted on by local senators to make June 10 Christina Grimmie Day in New Jersey. Marcus has called it an “additional layer of hope” and looks forward to “celebrating” the person his sister was. Albert shared that they wanted people to know his daughter’s death was “more than just a tragedy” and that her legacy lives on.On March 12, the family marked what would have been Christina Grimmie’s 32nd birthday.
