Who is Michael Sweet? Musician details health struggles in reaction to Anthony Fauci hearing 

In a July 29 Facebook post, musician Michael Sweet reacted to physician, scientist, and immunologist Anthony Fauci’s Senate hearing about the COVID-19 origin and blamed the pandemic for his two-year cancer battle.

Sharing a 13-second clip of Fauci, 85, from Norah O’Donnell’s CBS Evening News segment, Sweet wrote:

“My biggest regret during Covid was getting the shot/shots (this is my opinion and my personal view. I’m not by any means reprehending anyone who got the shot). We were told (like many) that we could not do our job, we could not perform (in certain venues) unless we had the vaccine. So, we did what we needed to continue on. To survive.”

Michael Sweet, who is a singer, songwriter, guitarist, and founding member of the band Stryper, continued:

“Although there are not a lot of articles out there on the possible correlation between the COVID vaccine and my health issues (retinal detachment & thyroid cancer), there are some… Interestingly enough, no one in my family has ever had issues with retinal detachments or thyroid cancer. After my first shot, my retina detached. A few years after that, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer.”

Sweet acknowledged that while there was no way to “prove” that his ailments were “caused” by the COVID vaccines, it is still “interesting” to note that they might be related. He concluded:

“I know this much - I’ll never get another Covid vaccine again.”

Michael Sweet: Life and career

Michael Sweet was born in 1963 in Orange County, California, to musician, writer, and singer parents. As a young boy, he was inspired by a variety of music in his home, such as metal, 50s rock, jazz, and country.

His dad listened to Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, and railroad music before moving on to Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jimi Hendrix and Black Sabbath.

“That gave me a real appreciation for all styles,” Sweet explains.

He co-founded Grammy-nominated Christian hard rock/ metal band Stryper in the 1980s and was known for his “soaring vocals and shredding riffs,” according to intro.live.

Stryper has sold over 10 million records, including chart-topping tracks like Calling on You, Always There for You, Free, and Honestly. They are also known for their 1986 album, To Hell with the Devil.

Stryper’s most recent work, When We Were Kings (2024), was produced by Michael Sweet, who called it their “best modern-era album.” That same year, the band embarked on their 40th anniversary tour across 40 cities in three months.

2025 saw Sweet and his band tour across Latin America, European festivals and U.S. concerts. They also released a Christmas album.

Michael Sweet is also a successful solo recording artist, music producer, and vocal tracker who tours internationally and calls himself the “hardest-working musician in the business.”

“I’m fortunate to have so many opportunities with all sorts of projects on the table. Sometimes I get overwhelmed, but as an overachiever I tend to work really well under pressure,” a quote reads on his website.

His solo projects include a 1994 self-titled album, followed by a sequel, Truth, in 2000. He also released two more albums, I’m Not Your Suicide and Ten in 2015 and 2019, respectively.

Over the years, Michael Sweet also worked with other artists and bands, such as George Lynch’s Sweet & Lynch, Tracii Guns’ Sunbomb, Iconic, and as the co-lead vocalist and guitarist for the rock group BOSTON.

“Collaborating with different people really helps pull the best out of you. I love to take on new challenges, especially ones that push me creatively… I get bored easily, so I love to experiment and try new things. If a strong challenge comes my way, I usually take it on. The reason I keep singing, playing, writing, and working on music is because it’s what I love. Music that moves people in a powerful way; that’s what I am passionate about and that’s what keeps me going,” Michael shares on his website.

He encourages people to hold on to their faith and remain committed to their goals. Sweet adds:

“Whatever you believe, I challenge you to bow your head, look up to heaven and say a prayer to God. Pray longer, pray harder and pray more often, and let’s see what happens. I guarantee it will change lives for the better.”

The musician also states:

“I’m not a shredder, but I do consider myself as a guitar player who sings. The most important thing is how everything fits into making each song the best it can be. Countless people have stuck with me and by me for the long haul, and I’m truly grateful for all the loyal support.”

Today, Michael Sweet is based in Plymouth, Massachusetts. His first wife, Kyle, succumbed to ovarian cancer in 2009, ending their 22-year marriage. They shared a son, Michael, and a daughter, Ellena, both adults. He now enjoys making meals and binge-watching TV shows with his wife Lisa Champagne.

In a February 2025 interview with Hotel Hobbies, Michael Sweet spoke about having cancer in his right thyroid and having his left thyroid removed to keep that side “intact.” The father of two mentioned:

“There was a nodule there that developed into cancer and they're just keeping an eye on it. They're calling it active surveillance. And they're going to check me again in June. They feel confident that there’s something we can do at this stage because it's slow-growing, self-contained for the most part in healthy tissue.”

Michael Sweet continued to explain:

“I'm not really comfortable leaving any kind of cancer in my body, but I'm following their lead. They're really great doctors. I'm in the best care possible. We'll see what happens in June. I think they're concerned about me as a singer because this one particularly is closer to the vocal nerve. So that’s where I am.”

His solo project, The Masterplan, came out this April, followed by the single, I’m Alright (I’m Okay), in May, about his cancer battle.
