Swedish ice hockey player Rasmus Dahlin and his longtime fiancé Carolina Matovac are mourning the loss of their unborn child. On January 26, Matovac shared an Instagram post featuring a picture of herself and Dahlin in an air ambulance.

It showed her wearing an oxygen mask and several tubes attached to her hands, while the Buffalo Sabres star covered his face with a mask. The image appears to be from the day she suffered a miscarriage and experienced heart failure.

“Today was meant to be the day we finally met you. You will always hold a special place in our hearts as our first baby, even though we never had the chance to meet. Our love for you is endless. Though you didn’t get to experience this world, you played a vital role in ensuring that I could continue to be a part of it,” Carolina, 25, captioned her post.

She continued:

“If it weren’t for my worries about you, we might never have called for help and gone to the hospital. Because of that decision, I was in the right place at the right time during my first heart failure. This is just one of the many reasons I am alive today, able to embrace a normal life once again.”

Carolina Matovac is a philanthropist. She has been dating Rasmus Dahlin since 2019.

Matovac concluded her recent post, calling their unborn baby “our hero” and hoping that he/she was “being well cared for in heaven.”

“We love you, baby Matovac Dahlin,” the caption ended.

Exploring Rasmus Dahlin and Carolina Matovac’s relationship

According to The Rasmus Dahlin Foundation, the NHL player met Carolina Matovac in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 2015. After four years of friendship, they began a romantic relationship. Last year, they got engaged.

Currently, the couple resides in Buffalo, USA, the home of the Sabres. Since moving in 2021, Carolian Matovac → has been actively involved in community service, including working for the nonprofits GiGi’s Playhouse and Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The website reads:

“Rasmus and Carolina share a strong commitment to creating a positive impact on the lives of children and their families and take great pride in collaboratively establishing The Foundation. Together, they are excited to share this initiative with the Buffalo community.”

In September 2025, Rasmus Dahlin shared a letter for his fans posted on the NHL and Buffalo Sabres websites and social media pages.

“I want to share with you a traumatic experience that my fiancé, Carolina, and our families experienced this offseason. While on vacation in France early this summer, Carolina began to feel sick for a few days, which quickly turned into her experiencing major heart failure,” the 25-year-old began.

He continued:

“Fortunately, she received CPR on multiple occasions, and up to a couple of hours at a time to keep her alive, which ultimately saved her life. Without her receiving lifesaving CPR, the result would have been unimaginable. It is hard to even think about the worst-case scenario.”

Rasmus Dahlin wrote that Carolina Matovac spent weeks on life support before she underwent a heart transplant. He extended his gratitude to the medical and rehabilitation teams in both France and Sweden, who helped Carolina get back on her feet.

“Without the incredible commitment, expertise, care, and sensitivity of all the people who treated Carolina, we would not be in the position that we are in today, with Carolina recovering well and on the path to a full recovery. We also want to extend our gratitude to the NHLPA and the NHL for the incredible support and efforts they made for us during this incredibly difficult time,” the message read.

Rasmus Dahlin wished a special thanks to Dr Scott Delaney of the NHLPA who not only ensured that his fiancé received the “best medical treatment possible,” but also comforted their families and helped them understand the situation.

The Sabres caption also acknowledged the support from Terry and Kim Pegula, their family, Kevyn Adams, Lindy Ruff, the Sabres Organization, Craig Oster, and Newport Sports for their “continued guidance and support” during their difficult time.

“While Carolina is still working through her rehab to return to be with me in Buffalo, she has demonstrated an incredible determination, spirit, positivity, and resilience that I am in awe of. This has undoubtedly been the most challenging chapter of our lives. However, it is something that we have learned so much from,” Dahlin noted.

Rasmus shared that he and his fiancé would “continue to grow from these experiences” and were grateful for all the love, support, best wishes, and prayers. He wrote about the importance of “fully living each day” while appreciating the “people closest to us.”

Towards the end, the ice hockey champion spoke about the significance of CPR treatment and training alongside that of organ donation.

“We want to recognize the tireless and oftentimes thankless efforts of emergency and healthcare professionals everywhere. We cannot say thank you enough to all organ donors, and are appreciative beyond words for the new life that organ donation has provided to Carolina. We hope that we can all reflect on how fortunate we are to have the people and experiences that we share together every single day,” Rasmus Dahlin added.

With another set of thank you for everyone who stood by them during their crisis, Rasmus Dahlin shared that Carolina Matovac was exhibiting a “fighter spirit” while in rehab and was on her path to a “full recovery.”

The couple’s wedding date remains undisclosed.
