Comedian Shane Gillis faced online backlash after using the phrase “two big fat b**** sisters” during his stand-up monologue while hosting Saturday Night Live (SNL).

Gillis has two sisters: Kait Gillis and Sarah Gillis. Kait is his older sister. She is a non-profit leader and family advocate who also founded Nour Coffee Shop in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania. Sarah is his younger sister and a creative production designer.

Gillis returned to host SNL for the third time after being fired in 2019, with musical guest Rosalía. During his opening monologue, he referenced his sisters, joking about a childhood memory when one of them yelled at him while he was watching TV. He compared growing up with brothers versus sisters.

The Matt and Shane's Secret Podcast host shared this while speaking on weight loss, hiking, and public gyms in New York.

Shane Gillis slammed for commenting on his sisters during SNL monologue

During his opening monologue at Saturday Night Live, Shane Gillis leaned into self-deprecating stories about being mocked and shamed.

He recounted an incident, reflecting on “one of the meanest things” that anyone told him while attending Joe Rogan’s private gym, shirtless in his underwear. Theo Von and Rogan showed up; Rogan said Theo told him he looked like a “gas station egg.” He said:

“The thing that hurt the most was when he closed the glass door, I saw my own reflection and I looked exactly like a gas station egg. That’s one of the meanest things anyone’s told me: ‘You look like a wet, bagged, hard-boiled egg.'”

Shane Gillis was raised along with two sisters. He made a derogatory comment about their weight at his recent appearance on SNL, describing them as “two big, fat-b**** sisters.” He added that he was used to such insults. His sisters would heckle him with “the meanest things,” including calling him “b**** hips.” They also poked fun at his receding hairline, saying he resembled a fascist leader. He framed this as part of the psychological impact of their teasing.

A segment of social media users were clearly offended by Gillis’ remarks made about women and his sisters.

A Threads user called Gillis' SNL monologue 'absolutely disgusting' and objected to his remarks about women and his sisters.

Another user described Gillis' SNL opening as "cold," adding that they found it "pretty good" initially but were later disappointed when the comedian started calling out women for their gym attire.

A third user stood by Gillis' side, noting his popularity. They remarked that if Gillis hadn't said anything offensive, it wouldn't be "funny."

Born Shane Michael Gillis on December 11, 1987, in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, he comes from a diverse family that often inspires his stand-up comedy. His father, Phil Gillis, has appeared as a guest on Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast. He worked in the sales department. His mother, Joan Gillis, is a homemaker and emotional anchor.

Both parents raised their children, including Shane, Kait, and Sarah, in the Catholic faith, instilling discipline with a mix of humour. All three siblings attended Trinity High School in nearby Camp Hill.

Shane Gillis’ elder sister, Kathaleen “Kait” Gillis, is married to Mina Hanna, an Egyptian Coptic Christian. They have four kids, including a daughter named Nour who has Down syndrome. Kait founded and co-owns Nour Coffee, an inclusive café in Hampden Township and Camp Hill that employs and trains neurodivergent people and people with disabilities.

Gillis’ other sister, Sarah, keeps a low profile. Shane has occasionally referenced her in his stand-up and podcast appearances. According to a People magazine report, Shane Gillis dated social media influencer Grace Brassel from July 2024 until they broke up in late 2025. He is currently single.
