Sandra Bullock appeared in a recent episode of the SmartLess podcast and opened up about the loss of her longtime partner Bryan Randall to ALS three years ago at the age of 57. The Proposal actress explained that the late model-photographer “asked me not to share” his “traumatic diagnosis,” and she tried to “honor” his request even after he was gone.“I wasn’t allowed to speak about it. That was the request and I tried — I honored it. I know why he asked me not [to],” Bullock, 62, revealed. She continued to state that the COVID-19 lockdown and her late partner’s diagnosis put a “huge weight” on her and “isolated me in the process.”Sandra Bullock further told the hosts Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett that Bryan Randall privately fought ALS for three years before his death.“I started grieving Bryan four years before he passed. He was ill for half of our relationship… My person left a lot earlier than the body left. I don’t think I ever dealt with that until after he passed, because you’re just on this treadmill, you know?” the actress-producer added.Bryan Randall is survived by daughter Skylar Staten Randall, who is a 32-year-old aspiring model. Other survivors include Bullock’s adopted children Louis and Laila, whom he co-parented.Sandra also mentioned that “for a while” her sister Gesine Bullock-Prado was the only person who knew about Randall’s diagnosis, before she confided in friends such as Bateman’s wife Amanda Anka and fellow actress Jennifer Aniston.“When the physical illness was then coupled with the mental health aspect of things — and it’s something that people don’t talk about… it was a trifecta that was pretty dark,” she explained.More about Bryan Randall’s daughterBryan Randall welcomed his only child, Skylar Staten Randall, with his former partner Janine Staten in Los Angeles, CA, in September 1993. When Skylar was ten, she lost her mother to a drug overdose in January 2004.For years, she was raised by her maternal grandmother, Pierrette Johnson, in Oregon before moving back with her father and attending high school in L.A. Skylar, who mostly uses her mother’s surname, attended college in Arizona. In a 2019 edition of the NW Magazine, a family insider revealed that Bryan Randall and Sandra Bullock were estranged from Skylar.“Skylar has completely cut herself off from that celebrity world – she wants nothing to do with it, and barely speaks about Bryan and Sandra. She could be on a red carpet every week if she wanted – she's basically the step-daughter of an Oscar-winner – but she's just not interested,” the source said back then.Following her dad’s death in August 2023, another insider shared in an exclusive chat with the New York Post about how Skylar’s parents met in rehab in Oregon in the early 1990s.“Heroin was their drug of choice and I remember meeting them both when Janine was still pregnant [with Skylar]. Bryan had just gotten out of rehab at that point and they were both struggling. After Skylar was born, he was never around,” a mutual friend mentioned. After the couple separated, Janine reportedly went to court and demanded child support from Bryan in 1994 and later in 2004. An ex-roommate of Staten claimed she wanted to “move forward with her life” and raise her daughter but fell back into a life of substance abuse after meeting a fellow addict.“I knew of Janine because she had an affair with my husband and that broke up our marriage… She was a drug addict and he was a drug addict… and misery loves company. I was expecting my husband to be at work and not cheat on me. So now, he’s my ex-husband,” the woman explained. The source recalled that despite her circumstances, Skylar was “always well-behaved” and a “beautiful little girl” and “very bright.”“I could see she was sometimes confused about what was going on around her, but she never really threw any tantrums. She was a normal, bright kid given the circumstances she was around. Janine was also very beautiful, and just brilliant. She had so much going for her, but those drugs had a hold on her,” the former family friend noted. After Janine died, her mother too followed with a “broken heart,” leaving Skylar in custody of her father. Insiders claim Bryan Randall stepped up as a parent and cleaned up his life, including working as a model for high-end brands like Yves Saint Laurent and Hugo Boss and posing for fashion magazines like Vogue Paris and Harper’s Bazaar. Eventually, he launched his own company called Bryan Randall Photography. In the wake of Bryan Randall’s demise, an insider told The Post:“My heart goes out to Skylar. Her mom, who struggled for a long time, died tragically, and then her grandmother. And now her father, so she is now an orphan. Skylar has gone through so much in her young life.”In a December 2021 episode of Red Table Talk, Sandra Bullock fondly spoke of Bryan Randall and their “three” children:“I found the love of my life. We share two beautiful children — three children [including] his older daughter. It’s the best thing ever… I don’t wanna say do it like I do it, but I don’t need a paper to be a devoted partner and devoted mother.”Now, in the SmartLess podcast, the Oscar-winning actress is speaking about her late partner’s ALS.“The process of elimination over the course of a year. And somewhere you keep going back and they give you all these milestones, these things to do, these grips, these breath tests, all these things. You have to quietly plan. And I’m a very good planner with illness,” Bullock noted. She recalled how her father had many accidents and her mother succumbed to cancer and so no illness “scared” her.“I can see and be around just about anything. But I had two young kids that were navigating it, especially a little girl who saw [Randall] as a father figure,” Sandra noted. The Practical Magic 2 star met Bryan Randall at her son’s birthday party in 2015. They soon began dating and were together until his passing. Back then, a representative told PEOPLE that Sandra Bullock needed time to “care for herself.”“She spent a lot of time healing, being with her kids and being at home. She needed to ensure that she and her kids were in the best possible place for her to go back to work,” the source explained. The SmartLess episode is now available to early access subscribers on SiriusXM and will be released widely on August 24.
