Who are Tupac Shakur’s siblings? All we know about late rapper’s family as former gang member found guilty of his murder

Duane Keith Davis has reportedly been found guilty of murdering Tupac Shakur. He is a 63-year-old former South Side Compton Crips leader.

A Las Vegas jury has found Davis guilty of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon in the 1996 killing of the rapper. Shakur was reportedly shot in a drive-by shooting on September 7, 1996, while riding in a BMW with Death Row Records founder Marion “Suge” Knight. He succumbed to his injuries in a hospital six days later. He was then 25.

The prosecutors portrayed Davis as a “shot caller” who planned the shooting and supplied the weapon to his nephew Orlando Anderson who opened fire at Shakur. As the verdict was announced on August 31, Shakur’s family became emotional. They held hands, hugged and cried. His sister, Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur was also present in the courtroom.

The California Love artist had no full biological siblings. He came from a blended family which include his half-siblings Sekyiwa "Set" Shakur, Mopreme Shakur, N’Neka Garland, Takerra Allen and Billy Garland Jr.

What do we know about Tupac Shakur’s family?

Tupac Shakur became a household name in the early 1990s after the released of his debut album, 2Pacalypse Now. This was followed by a breakout role in the film Juice.

He was born on June 16, 1971 to Afeni Shakur (born Alice Faye Williams) and Billy Garland. They were Black Panther activists. Afeni became pregnant with Tupac while out on bail in 1970 during the conspiracy trial of the Panther 21. When Afeni conceived Shakur, she and Billy were married to their respective partners.

At that time, Afeni’s husband was Lumumba Shakur and Garland was involved with a woman named Carol, as per the reports. Afeni’s marriage to Lumumba ended he came to know that he was not the biological father of Tupac Shakur.

Billy Garland and Afeni Shakur never married. She raised him and sister Sekyiwa as a single mother. Tupac Shakur never met his biological father until he reunited with him in November 1994 at Bellevue Hospital in New York after being shot at Quad Studios. During an interview with XXL Magazine, Garland said:

“There’s no doubt in my mind that I could’ve been a better father. There’s no doubt. I have to bear the burden of that, because maybe there was something I could’ve said or have done, maybe, that might not have led to the path that his life has led to. So I have to bear the burden of that.”

After Tupac Shakur’s death in 1996, Garland attempted to inherit half of his son’s estate. According to the Los Angeles Times, the judge denied him inheritance, noting his contributions to support and care for his son were “minuscule.” Tupac was only five years old when his dad lost contact with him until they finally reunited.

Tupac also has half-siblings on his biological father’s side. They are Takerra Allen (a romance author), N’Neka Garland (A television producer), William Garland Jr (a rapper), Malik Garland and Landon Garland (Garland’s oldest son).

Afeni’s second marriage was to Mutulu Shakur in 1975, who became Tupac Shakur’s stepfather. Shakur was only four years old when Mutulu married Shakur’s mother. He was a political activist with the Black Liberation Army and acupuncturist.

Additionally, Mutulu had other children from other relationships including Mopreme Shakur (rapper), Chinua Shakur, Nzingha Shakur, and Ayize Shakur. They became Tupac’s step-siblings.

Mutulu and Afeni became parents to their daughter, Sekyiwa. They divorced in 1982 after seven years of their marriage. Today, Sekyiwa serves as the president of the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation.

Shakur’s mother, Afeni, passed away in May 2016 at the age of 69 after going into cardiac arrest. His stepfather, Mutulu, died at the age of 72 in July 2023 from the complications of multiple myeloma. His biological father, Billy, is still alive. The former member of the Black Panther Party is 77 years old and continues to speak about his relationship with his son.
