Soul and R&B singer-actress Patti LaBelle’s adopted son and nephew, William “Byl” Holte, claimed in a recent tweet that she kicked him out of her home over his support for Donald Trump.

Sharing a photo with his aunt, Byl wrote 16 hours ago:

“Here’s what supporting TRUMP cost me: My aunt is Patti LaBelle, famous singer AND DEMOCRAT. Christmas 2019, she had just informed me that I had to move out of the home I had happily shared with her for 12 years. So, when I heard her and my family talking about what a threat Trump was, I asked her, ‘Why should I be afraid of Trump when you’re the one who just made me homeless?’ Her family instantly attacked me and threw me out of her house.”

William Holte, who is a Philadelphia-based boutique landscape designer, Muck Rack writer, and conservative political commentator, continued:

“And just last year, she had a problem with me talking about my life with her on this platform. My punishment for using my 1st Amendment right this way was LIFETIME BANISHMENT. And as of today, she's still not speaking to me. And because SHE'S not speaking to me: NO ONE IN HER CIRCLE IS SPEAKING TO ME. And this will apparently last the rest of my life. WHY? Because NO ONE VIOLATES AND DISRESPECTS DEMOCRACY AND FREE SPEECH MORE THAN DEMOCRATS.”

Byl mentioned learning a “lesson” on Black Christmas seven years ago and learning some more “ever since.” He also claimed that he has “gotten out of politics” but the aunt side of his family “still hates me.” Patti LaBelle’s estranged nephew concluded by writing:

“But all that tells me is that I'm doing something RIGHT. Because I’d rather vote Republican because I WANT to, than Democrat because I HAVE to. God Bless America.”

Patti LaBelle has yet to address Byl’s claims.

More about Patti LaBelle’s nephew

William “Byl” Holte is the son of Patti LaBelle’s youngest sister, Jacqueline “Jackie” Holte-Padgett. After Jackie succumbed to brain cancer in July 1989 at the age of 43, she adopted Byl and his sister Stayce.

Today, William Holte is a right-wing writer-commentator who has over 169,000 followers on his @SirBylHolte X account. His bio reads:

“I write from the intersection of DC and Hollywood, happily calling out the politics of TV and Movies.”

In December 2020, Byl went viral after Dean Browning, a white Republican candidate from Pennsylvania, tweeted around Thanksgiving that he was a “Black gay guy” who could “personally say Obama did nothing for me.” The since-deleted post continued:

“My life only changed a little bit and it was for the worse. Everything is so much better under Trump though. I feel respected - which I never do when Democrats are involved.”

Browning later clarified he was directly quoting a Republican supporter.

“Regarding the tweet that is going viral from my account — I was quoting a message that I received earlier this week from a follower. Sorry if context was not clear. Trump received record minority votes & record LGBTQ votes. Many people won't say it vocally, but do in private.”

Holte was reportedly that “guy” and later posted a video defending the Republican and confirming his own conservative political affiliations. However, at the time Byl identified as Dan Purdy and stated:

“Donald Trump has never done anything to hurt me, either as a gay man or as a Black man. Nor has he done anything to hurt anybody in the four years he's been in office because he hasn't had time to. So, what's the big deal?”

Subsequently, Dean Browning confirmed in an interview with The Morning Call that Dan Purdy is an alias of William Holte. After his identity was revealed, Patti LaBelle, a longtime and vocal Obama supporter, told O Magazine:

“Guess what? I didn't choose my family. I choose my friends. I love Billy. He has a Republican mind. And, guess what? I don't. But do I hate him for having the mind that he has? No, I can't.”

Patti LaBelle further mentioned that, before the interview, William Holte called her to say, “I love you” and “I am so sorry.” She added:

“You give people chances when sometimes, they don't even know what they're doing or why. So, I can't beat him up for the rest of his life. I decided to take the high road with him by letting him know that you make mistakes — but when my name comes in that mistake, that's a no-no. Certain things happen in life, and I just keep going on, because I love him.”

Meanwhile, the Dan Purdy account was suspended by X as it violated the rule that prohibits impersonation that is intended to or does “mislead, confuse, or deceive others.”

This wasn’t the only time Patti LaBelle’s adopted son found himself embroiled in controversy. During the #MeToo Movement, he was under fire for his Medium blog, which called it the “greatest display of female weakness, ever.”

Appearing on Michele Tafoya’s podcast in May 2024, William Holte further spoke about his politics, anti-feminist views, Barack Obama, the Biden administration, and being present at the Capitol on January 6, 2020.

Byl’s LinkedIn suggests he has a bachelor’s degree and was also an office assistant at Pattonium Inc, before becoming a landscape designer.
