Why is Office Romance R-rated? All you need to know

Netflix's Office Romance seems to be a polished workplace rom-com, but its R rating indicates it's a movie for grownups. The motion picture stars Jennifer Lopez and Brett Goldstein and is a combination of office drama, romance, and adult humor. It received its R rating mainly for the s*xual scenes, profane language, and n*dity (graphic).

So, if you're thinking your teen may want to see it or just don't want to have an uncomfortable family movie night, here are some spoiler-free explanations as to why it can be avoided.

Strong language in Office Romance

The biggest reason why Office Romance earned its R rating is the profusion of strong language. The use of profanity is widespread throughout the film: in the workplace, during arguments, in jokes, and in romantic exchanges. IMDb's parental guide rating lists the film as being very explicit in its language.

Although the conversations are in the style that's used in many modern rom-coms: fast-paced and contemporary, what's more problematic is the constant frequency and not a few isolated instances of foul language.

The film does have a much more grownup feel for those expecting a family-friendly romance. For many people, the R rating seems quite justified because of the constant use of strong language.

S*xual humor and adult themes

Of course, the film is set in the workplace drama category, and the romance that ensues includes many s*xual themes and grown-up material. Office Romance does not feature much explicit scenes, but rather suggestive jokes, innuendos, flirtation and awkward adult situations.

A prominent physical reaction performance is probably most noticeable when performed for comic effect, but it's obviously intended for audiences that are grown-up.

The content is similar to that of many other modern R-rated films, but some young people may be uncomfortable with the s*xual references. The R rating is more about the pervasive s*xual humor and grown-up talk than graphic romantic scenes, which throughout the film has an unmistakably adult tone.

The factor parents should know about is graphic nudity

The most-discussed aspect of Office Romance is the graphic n*dity cited in its R rating. The childbirth scene is explicit and seemed shocking to some due to it being rather graphic for a romantic comedy.

At first, n*dity was introduced in a nons*xual medical setting, but the realism has been a surprise to audiences and has created much discussion.

This can be the most important question for parents. Some graphic images might be disturbing to even teenagers who are used to strong language and romantic themes.

Office Romance mixes lots of cursing with grown-up s*xual humor, and is therefore not recommended for younger audiences. This romantic film is best left for viewing after the children have gone to bed.
