American author, reporter and correspondent for the CBS News magazine 60 Minutes, Scott Pelley, was fired from the network after a verbal confrontation with the new leadership during a staff meeting.

Pelley, who has been a part of CBS News for 37 years, is best known for his work on 60 Minutes and as an anchor on CBS Evening News.

The seeds of Scott Pelley's firing were sown during a staff meeting on Monday, when the veteran correspondent publicly confronted the new 60 Minutes Executive Producer, Nick Bilton, about his qualifications. Reportedly, Bilton was brought in after former 60 Minutes executive Producer Tanya Simon was let go by editor-in-chief Bari Weiss, despite lacking experience in traditional broadcast news.

When Pelley raised this concern during the staff meeting on Monday, his contract was abruptly terminated, with a letter by Nick Bilton, which reads as follows:

“You hijacked my first meeting with staff to disparage me, my qualifications and my intentions with remarkable incivility and contempt. I welcome a diversity of viewpoints and respectful debate among the team, but this was nothing of the sort.”

More on this in our story.

Why was Scott Pelley fired from CBS?

In addition to Scott Pelley's fiery accusations against Nick Bilton, he expressed concerns about Weiss and the recent changes to 60 Minutes. Weiss, who was hired last year, was responsible for making many drastic changes to CBS News Magazine's 60 Minutes, including the firings of Sharyn Alfonsi and Simon. Pelley described this event as 'Black Thursday' and accused Weiss of unjustly firing Alfonsi, after she publicly expressed her disagreement about Weiss' handling of an important story.

According to multiple media outlets, Pelley accused Weiss of 'murdering 60 Minutes':

“She is murdering 60 Minutes. She does not love this place. She was brought in to kill it, and she’s been doing exactly that.”

Additionally, Pelley also questioned Weiss' qualifications for her current position and confronted her about the 'catastrophic' changes made at the Evening News.

Following Pelley's verbal confrontation with both Weiss and Nick Bilton, the former called an emergency meeting with CBS News president Tom Cibrowski and HR, hoping to reach an agreement. However, as Bilton wrote in his termination letter, while CBS attempted to reach a compromise, the veteran correspondent opposed the decision, ultimately leading to his sudden dismissal.

What has Scott Pelley said about his recent firing?

Following Scott Pelley's termination, the veteran correspondent is in talks with Bryan Freedman, a well-known litigator who has represented other news media personalities, for representation.

In an interview with The New York Times, Pelley defended his actions and openly addressed his termination at CBS:

“I have been in combat in Afghanistan. I have been in combat in Iraq. I have been in the war zone in Ukraine multiple times, risking my life and the happiness of my family because of my devotion to the broadcast.”

While Weiss and Nick Bilton were not appreciative of Pelley's fiery comments about the change in leadership at 60 Minutes, former executive producer Bill Owens has come forward in support, even defending his decision to question the leadership. At a New York Press Club event, Owens commented that he is proud of Scott Pelley for questioning the changes made in 60 Minutes and for smelling 'a fraud a mile away.'

Scott Pelley's abrupt departure has not only cast uncertainty over the future of 60 Minutes but also deepened concerns about trust in CBS News' leadership.
